Indigo Grove Designs

Indigo Grove Designs Art in clay, shards, and yarnšŸ³ļøā€šŸŒˆ Indigo Grove Designs is a sole proprietorship run by myself, eileen storey, out of my home in Dickinson, Texas.

My clay studio is in my dining room, and my kiln is in my garage. IGD has been my passion in Texas since 2002, and originated when I lived in Japan in 2000 and began to make mosaics. I work mainly in hand-built functional pottery and sculpture, but also create wheel-thrown work as well. My tile collages and mosaics are on a smallish scale, but I enjoy creating larger commissions such as kitchen backsplashes and tile installations.

Slow going. It’s tough working on stuff when you only have an hour or two at a time. Can’t really even get into a flow state. But a little by little, I’ll get this done.

So I have spent a part of each of the last 10 days or so in the studio. This hasn’t happened for well over a year. I’m really proud of myself. Mainly, I’ve been making little tiles. Lots and lots and lots of little tiles. They’ll be fired fairly soon. I’ve also been working on this larger mosaic, filling in the background a bit with tiles that I’ve cut. I know the colors are really close. The background leaf shapes and the foreground stalk shapes. When I take this to critique next Monday, I’ll get some ideas on how to differentiate between the two.

New work! ā€œMorning Stack,ā€ 15x15ā€. Handmade clay tiles, driftwood, sandstone, beads, pebbles, and tinted thinset on tile backer board. Available soon.

I made the copper colored stone shapes several years ago, influenced by environmental artist Michael Grab . His works really soothes me, and I want to try and re-create (in some way) more of his structures. So that’s also in the works. Go check out his page. He’s really incredible.

Once again, a beginning. This time, I’ll be using dry tints in the thinset. These pieces (driftwood in the middle, top left, and bottom, right; found metal on the top middle, middle right and bottom left) are attached with heavy matte gel. Excited about the earthy colors I’ll be using! And did I mention: entries to Lawndale’s The Big Show are due Tuesday?? Hoping I can get this done in time!!

Well. Not so sure about this anymore. I’m not sure if I should keep at it, if it will come around to something that I like, or if I should just abandon it now. Part of me thinks I should go ahead and continue for a little bit at least, just to get in the practice of mixing the colored thin set. But it looks messy and Amateurish and just does not feel good. What would you do??

Okay. Next. This is for a an exhibition. I am entering with a theme: pick a color. So it can only be one color. I’m choosing green. I’m thinking this is gonna work. Marinating on the title. I have a feeling this piece will be a very long process, however.

Going to need to hold off on this one, for a bit. I’m having more difficulty than I’d like creating a brown thinset color that is favorable, so I will wait on getting some pigments back from . Meanwhile, I’ve got other ideas!

The first 2/3 of the mosaic conference trip in Albuquerque. Took a 2-day workshop with the funny and talented and most-inspiring Kelley Knickerbocker- using pigments to tint mortar, ostensibly to use under glass. But ooooh do u have some amazing ideas!!!

I’ve just boarded a plane for Albuquerque. Will be attending a 5-day mosaic conference! SO excited! This is the latest piece I’ve made- not quite finished. It’s a real departure for me in terms of color, as well. But I am very happy with it. Stay tuned- lots of photos to come!

Spent a solid six hours working in the studio yesterday. Felt good about this piece until I ran out of the tiles. Then felt a little lost. Then made a switch up, and I think this one will be solid. Have a couple titles rolling about in my mind. It was a good afternoon. Just making something.

Listening to an amazing novel while finishing this piece. A Russian cosmonauts is talking over the radio to a random woman on earth. And she asks him, ā€œare you crestfallen? Do you find yourself, sometimes, wondering what is the point?ā€ He doesn’t agree, but of course, he doesn’t need to. She has lost her husband. And the cosmonaut is orbiting earth. And really, what is the point? Has our crest not fallen?
