Eleven miles off the highway, nestled in a valley whose entrance seems protected by ancient Mogollon petroglyphs, lies a haven from the modern worlds's rat race -- Hidden Valley Ranch RV Resort. Here, vistas track across thousands of acres of BLM land then climb the Cookes Mountain range whose dormant volcano lies hidden on the other side. Trails wind through that land, which is both harsh and magnificent. They lie in wait for four-by-fours, side-by-sides, and hikers just strolling through the ever-changing terrain.

Hidden Valley Ranch RV Resort is a rock hound's dream, a bird watcher's delight, a naturalist's playground. Mule deer roam the parks generous sized, full-hookup sites. The park boasts free Wi-Fi, a bathhouse, and a large laundry. The clubhouse has a pool table, a free library, and often a card game.

Herds of antelope run the area. Javelina sometimes roam through Hidden Valley Ranch RV Resort. An early morning bobcat sighting is always a possibility. The area boasts puma and on the mountain, black bear. Evenings bring out nighthawks, bats, and the calls of a mating pair of great horned owls.

And yet, Hidden Valley Ranch RV Resort is amazingly affordable, and worth the 7-mile trip down a well maintained gravel road. However, you might have to stop for a family of Gamble's or Scaled quail to herd their chicks across the road, or a pair of jackrabbits chasing one another.
