Summer heat compresses transmission fluid life faster than most drivers realize.

ATF is designed to run between 175°F and 200°F. In humid summers, under-hood temperatures push it into the 230–260°F zone in stop-and-go traffic — and every 20°F above 175°F cuts fluid life roughly in half. Fluid rated for 100,000 miles at 175°F is only good for around 25,000 miles at 220°F.

Warning signs we see every fall from heat-stressed transmissions:
