On Sunday, August 9th, High’s Marine hosted its 10th Bluegill Fishing Tournament! We only missed one year due to COVID, and we’re so proud to have reached this milestone.
We started the tournament as a way to raise funds for academic scholarships for our local school, and it has grown into a wonderful community tradition.
We were excited to see some new faces this year, as well as several familiar faces who have fished all 10 events! It was especially fun to see those who fished as kids and teens come back as adults to continue the tradition.
Our local sponsors showed up in a HUGE way this year, just as they do every year. This event would not be as successful as it is without their generosity and support. We also want to give a special shout-out to The Local Wash Tub, who made sure all of our rags and towels were clean for the weekend. It’s the little things that mean the most!
We appreciate our Decatur community more than we can say.
This year, 22 teams fished Lake of the Woods, and weighed in a total of 47.36 pounds of bluegill. After the tournament, Steve and Cindy Ray, owners of Front Street Pizza Pub, hosted an amazing fish fry. Neighbors came down to help clean fish, brought side dishes to share, and even offered some words of wisdom about the importance of being kind to one another.
That’s what this event is really about: community, tradition, and giving back.
Keep watching for more! We also co-hosted a Poker Run, and we’ll soon announce the total donation that will be presented to Davis Elementary - Decatur Public Schools.
