Just a reminder that Black Hills Elk Archery Season comes to a close September 30, with Elk R***e Season beginning October 1.

For many resident elk hunters, this is a hunt that has taken years — even decades — to prepare for. Some hunters have 8–30 years of preference points invested in their elk tag. And for some, there can be an additional 10-year wait before they are eligible to begin building preference points again after drawing an elk license.

That means some resident hunters have potentially 18–40 years invested in this opportunity to hunt elk!

As we head into r***e season, please remember that the Black Hills National Forest is a multi-use forest. A little extra awareness and consideration can go a long way during this important time for the resident elk hunters.

Have you heard the elk bugling this year?

There’s something about hearing an elk bugle echo through the Black Hills that gets your heart racing. It truly is one of the most incredible sounds of the forest this time of year. 🎶

I thought I’d share a couple of photos showing elk antler growth through the years. These photos were taken at the High Plains Western Heritage Center in Spearfish, South Dakota.

A little history, a little wildlife, and a reminder to appreciate the incredible place we get to enjoy.
