Replace my brake fluid? Are you kidding me?

Brake fluid should be replaced primarily because it is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time. This accumulated water lowers the fluid's boiling point, which can lead to "brake fade" or a spongy, unresponsive pedal, as the fluid may boil under high-heat braking conditions and create v***r bubbles. Additionally, old, contaminated fluid allows rust and corrosion to develop within the braking system components, such as the ABS modulator, calipers, and master cylinder, potentially causing premature, expensive failures.

It is generally recommended to replace brake fluid every 2 to 3 years, or approximately every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. The brake fluid in your vehicle may need to be changed more frequently if you drive in high-humidity areas, haul heavy loads, or experience severe stop-and-go driving conditions that create significant heat. However, the fluid should be changed immediately if it appears dark, dirty, or cloudy.

At Dayton Auto Care, we can check—in less than a minute—the condition of the brake fluid in your vehicle. We will do a visual inspection and test the effectiveness of the fluid to determine if contamination or water buildup makes your vehicle a candidate for a brake fluid service.

The Truth About Tire Dry Rot

Most drivers focus on tread depth—the classic penny test—but there is a hidden danger that has nothing to do with how much you drive: Dry Rot.

Signs of dry rot typically begin to appear once a tire reaches the 5-year mark but can start sooner.

Why is this dangerous?

• Structural Integrity: Dry rot compromises the "glue" holding the tire together.

• Blowout Risk: At highway speeds, the heat and pressure can cause a brittle tire to disintegrate, leading to a sudden and catastrophic blowout.

• False Confidence: A tire can have "perfect" tread and still be a ticking time bomb if the rubber is dry-rotted.

Bottom Line: If your tires are cracking, they are no longer safe. Dry-rotted tires must be replaced regardless of how much tread is left. We check your tire age and look for signs of dry rot when you bring your vehicle in for service at Dayton Auto Care.

Is This Hiding in Your Dashboard?

Take a look at the difference between a brand-new cabin air filter and one that’s been through a "rough season." While the clean filter on the left is ready to keep your air fresh, the one on the right, which we removed from a local vehicle, tells a different story.

Believe it or not, we see this more often than you’d expect here in Rhea County. Local rodents often find these filters to be the perfect, tucked-away spot to store food, harvest nesting material, or believe it or not, raise a family.

Why This Matters for Your Health

When a filter becomes a "mouse house," it isn’t just a mess—it’s a health hazard. Every time you turn on your fan, all the air entering your vehicle passes directly through that contaminated debris before reaching your vents. That means you and your passengers are breathing in air that has been filtered through rodent waste and old food.
