Replace my brake fluid? Are you kidding me?
Brake fluid should be replaced primarily because it is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time. This accumulated water lowers the fluid's boiling point, which can lead to "brake fade" or a spongy, unresponsive pedal, as the fluid may boil under high-heat braking conditions and create v***r bubbles. Additionally, old, contaminated fluid allows rust and corrosion to develop within the braking system components, such as the ABS modulator, calipers, and master cylinder, potentially causing premature, expensive failures.
It is generally recommended to replace brake fluid every 2 to 3 years, or approximately every 30,000 to 50,000 miles, depending on the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. The brake fluid in your vehicle may need to be changed more frequently if you drive in high-humidity areas, haul heavy loads, or experience severe stop-and-go driving conditions that create significant heat. However, the fluid should be changed immediately if it appears dark, dirty, or cloudy.
At Dayton Auto Care, we can check—in less than a minute—the condition of the brake fluid in your vehicle. We will do a visual inspection and test the effectiveness of the fluid to determine if contamination or water buildup makes your vehicle a candidate for a brake fluid service.
