Our apiary is officially registered with the state of Louisiana. Beekeeping was always part of Jeremy’s Army retirement plan, so it makes me happy to see it finally become reality. Our hives are thriving here, and this place has already been a blessing in so many ways.

Addie brought me a “present”!

🐱🐸

Part of me is impressed, part of me has the ick, and another part is irritated she wasted the best parts…. legs!

Into the compost bin it goes. Nothing goes to waste around here. ♻️

Good morning!🌞

Lots of memories of when we were stationed at Fort Irwin are popping up on my personal page. For those not familiar, it’s the U.S. Army’s National Training Center located in the Mojave Desert (in the middle of nowhere California ). We were only there for 10 months and it was my least favorite duty assignment. However, it still holds a special place in my heart bc it’s where my love affair with donkeys began. 8 yrs years later, and it’s still burning. 🔥

Some loves just stick with you. ❤️ 🫏

Government agencies and rescue groups have since relocated most of them. Our son was at NTC in July / Aug and didn’t see any.

I always smile when I find mushrooms in my garden beds. These ones growing in my compost are good sign that there’s a whole lot of microbial life breaking down organic matter. Fungi are wildly fascinating to me and the more you learn about them, the more you realize just how much is happening beneath our feet that we never see. 🍄✨

BTW, these yellow (flowerpot) parasols aren’t edible.

Someday you’ll find someone who’s completely obsessed with you.

For me, it’s a goat.

Josophat is infatuated with me. It can be a little much at times, especially with his Bucky-ness, but I’ll take it. 🐐😂 🥰

Yummy. Pretty. Healthy.

I’ve officially become the person who pickles everything from my garden. I love piling them onto fresh salad greens and the vinegar brine becomes the dressing.

Garden ➡️ jar ➡️ table. 🥗

Happy September!

We have a storm brewing in the Gulf, so I’m trying to get some outside work done before the rain rolls in. This is the time of year when my summer garden starts winding down, which means the next few weeks will be busy putting up what’s left. My okra, peppers, and loofah are still producing like crazy, but most of my other veggies are done for the season. My herbs are still going strong though.

I also inventoried my seeds and am working on my fall planting schedule. 🌱

There’s something so simple and satisfying about growing your own food. I love the sense of accomplishment, but even more than that, knowing exactly where it came from and that I’m growing it organically gives me peace of mind.

Lately I’ve been playing around with infused culinary salts and vinegars to add to my homestead pantry. Later this week I’m going to experiment with infused honey and calendula oil for my homemade soaps, lotions, salves, and lip balms.

I love finding new ways to use what I grow….from garden to kitchen to apothecary. 🌿
