We are seeing a continuation of thefts of catalytic converters being reported in our city.
Thieves are going after the devices, which are located on the undercarriage of your vehicles, so they can sell them to scrap yards.
They tend to target vehicles that sit higher off the ground and are easier to crawl under like trucks and SUVs. Replacing a catalytic converter can be expensive -- and so we encourage drivers to take steps to help prevent their vehicles from becoming targets:
-If possible, park your vehicle in a garage overnight or in a well lit or well traveled area.
-Consider having a protective metal plate or screen welded to your vehicle frame or purchasing a catalytic converter locking device. This will make it more difficult to steal.
-Have your VIN engraved on your catalytic converter. This may signal to scrap yards that the device is stolen.
-Catalytic converter thefts can occur quickly, but are often noisy, as thieves typically use saws to cut them off vehicles. If you see or hear anything suspicious, please call 911 immediately.
