I hope the little things never stop being a big deal.
There are people who can walk right past something beautiful without giving it much thought, and then there are those of us who will stop in the middle of whatever we're doing because the sky looks incredible. I like those people. The ones who still notice things. Life gets busy enough without becoming so damn busy that nothing catches your attention anymore.
I've always been that way. I can lose plenty of time wandering around outside with nowhere particular to be, and I'm perfectly capable of coming home with something in my pocket that was lying on the ground when I left. I don't really want to grow out of that. There are worse ways to waste an afternoon than paying attention.
Since today is Dolly Parton Day, there's something about her story that fits this better than I expected. Dolly grew up in the Smoky Mountains, and decades after leaving, she was still writing about the ordinary pieces of that childhood. Her official biography talks about her chasing butterflies, hearing old Appalachian songs and stories from relatives, and gathering around the radio with her family. Those little things followed her all the way into the songs she wrote as an adult. Dolly Parton
Maybe that's why so many of her songs feel like memories even when they aren't ours.
