Studio Thomas James shared their perspective with on the enduring design debate: bar cart versus bar cabinet, making the case for the bar cart.

The barts cart’s appeal lies in the ease and informality it brings to a room—something a cabinet doesn’t quite replicate.

“It feels collected rather than installed,” says Philip Thomas Vanderford. He explains that if a fully built-in bar isn’t part being installed, a bar cart brings a jewelry-like touch through furniture, whereas a bar cabinet can risk falling into an awkward middle ground.

At the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, Studio Thomas James introduced a trumpet-legged bar cart as a playful counterpoint within the room, bringing a sense of movement, lightness, and collected layering to the space.

For Father’s Day, we’ve gathered a collection of pieces that celebrate craftsmanship, utility, and quiet luxury. Designed to be used and collected, while each brings a sense of character to everyday rituals.

Consider the place where you pause before the plunge, towel over shoulder, already half in the water. That quick stop that somehow becomes part of the ritual: the slip of sandals, the echoing footsteps on stone, the anticipation of that first dive.

At Studio Thomas James, we’re reimagining the pool room as its own design moment, where function meets high style. Think custom millwork in washed coastal tones, integrated cubbies for sun-faded towels, and durable, elevated finishes that move seamlessly between wet and dry. Stone underfoot, wood warmed by sun, linen curtains that catch the breeze like a held breath before the jump.

Summer’s here. So go ahead—take a dip. But first, make the space before ritual as beautiful as the swim itself.

We’re pleased to share our studio’s work has been featured in Southern Living’s latest story, “12 Paint Colors That Make Small Rooms Look Bigger Instantly.”

For a modern home office, we selected Onyx, embracing the transformative power of a bold, immersive palette.

“By painting both the walls and ceiling a matte black, we were able to create a home office design that pulls you in and allows you to focus on day-to-day tasks,” says Vanderford. “We used emerald green for the window treatments and upholstery to bring a natural feel to the space while adding that perfect hint of color.”

A thoughtful reminder that making a room feel larger isn’t always about going lighter—it’s about creating depth, atmosphere, and intention. See the link in our stories for the full feature.

There’s an ease that naturally comes with layered interiors grounded in organic materials. Linen drapery, woven textures, lighter woods, and soft natural finishes create spaces that feel breathable, relaxed, and quietly refined.

We’re always drawn to materials that soften light and bring depth without heaviness.

Thoughtful texture, natural light, the kind of layering that makes a home feel cooler, calmer, and more connected to its surroundings underscores how we approach spaces in our design.

Seen in — “As summer travel season begins, Dallas designers share the destinations that stay with them.”

For Philip Vanderford, Venice remains a masterclass in restraint, atmosphere, and timelessness. “It’s luxurious without being declarative,” he shares of Hotel Cipriani. “The interiors never try to compete with the setting… instead, they recede just enough, allowing the landscape and the architecture to carry the experience.”

What resonates most is the sense of inevitability within the design, spaces that feel layered, studied, and entirely resolved. “The highest level of design isn’t about creating a moment; it’s about creating something that feels inevitable, as if it could never have been done any other way.”

As summer travel approaches, we find ourselves drawn again to the rooms that transport us. To spaces layered with a sense of lived elegance from favorite destinations like Paris, Pathos, Sicily, and London, to the pink sands of Bermuda and beyond.

For this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, Studio Thomas James conceived “The Belvedere Room,” a modern salon inspired by Milan’s Villa Necchi Campiglio. Wrapped in customized Phillip Jeffries Avon Scenic Roselyn wallcoverings and a shimmering Rembrandt ceiling treatment, the room layers a Donghia Renaldo chandelier, Thomas Pheasant for Baker Furniture cocktail tables, vintage Donghia seating, Vaughan lighting, and richly tailored textiles into a space that feels both transportive and deeply personal.

Playful refinement through expressive patterning. These interiors balance bold personality with architectural precision, where saturated color, couture detailing, and layered cultural references unfold.

From the blush Christian Lacroix botanical wallcovering in the powder room to Calacatta Borghini marble, Venetian glass hardware by Venini, and metallic Porter Teleo wallcoverings, each space moves between artistry and restraint with a confident use of color and continuity.

Throughout, European craftsmanship meets Asian nuance in a residence shaped by travel, collecting, and a deeply personal sense of composition.
