This 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R is a very clean R32 finished in KH2 Gunmetallic Grey with only 49,363 km / 30,672 original miles. Powered by the legendary RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six and paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, this right-hand-drive GT-R keeps the classic R32 formula simple and honest.

The car presents extremely well, including a notably clean dark interior. Many R32 interiors fade toward blue from years of sun exposure, but this example has retained a much nicer, darker appearance. Nissan Skyline GT-R Intercooler Guide: R32, R33 and R34

The intercooler removes heat from the compressed air leaving the turbochargers before that air enters the RB26DETT. Cooler air is denser and generally provides a better margin against detonation, but an intercooler is not free power without compromise.

Every core introduces some restriction and adds volume between the turbochargers and the engine. A properly selected intercooler can reduce charge temperature without excessive pressure loss or noticeably hurting response. A poorly selected one can be heavy, restrictive, slow to fill and block cooling air that the radiator desperately needs.

R32, R33, and R34 Nissan Skyline GT-Rs are not new cars anymore. The newest R34 GT-Rs are now old enough to import under the 25 year rule, and the earliest R32s are well into classic car territory. That means the air conditioning and heater system is usually dealing with age, old refrigerant, tired o-rings, sticky blend doors, weak actuators, dirty evaporators, previous repairs, and sometimes a mix of parts from more than one generation.
This post is an updated guide for troubleshooting the A/C and heater system on the Nissan Skyline GT-R. The original focus was R32 GT-R, but a lot of the same logic applies to R33 and R34 as well. The details do change by chassis, refrigerant type, compressor, pressure switch, and control unit, so always verify the part number and service manual section for the exact car you are working on.

The big split is refrigerant. R32 GT-Rs originally used R12, also known as CFC-12. R33 and R34 GT-Rs use R134a. R12 is no longer used in new motor vehicle A/C systems in the United States, and servicing or retrofitting old systems has to be done correctly. R134a is still commonly used for retrofits, but it is also a high global warming potential refrigerant, so newer vehicles have moved toward lower GWP refrigerants such as HFO-1234yf. For an old Skyline, the practical answer is not to guess. Identify what is actually in the system before charging it.
