The thermostat is a wax thermostatic element that regulates the temperature of the engine.Engines operate most economically when they are fully warmed up. When the engine is started and the coolant is cold, the thermostat should remain closed to prevent the coolant from circulating. When the coolant is fully heated up - normally to a temperature of around 195°F(91°C).

The head gasket can be made from many different materials, but the most common is multiple layers of steel. The head gasket is located between the cylinder head and the engine block. It keeps oil and coolant from leaking inside the cylinders. It also seals the combustion chamber so that it can build up enough compression for combustion.

The radiator is a heat transfer device. Hot coolant flows into the radiator when the thermostat is open. The coolant travels through a series of thin pipes in the main part of the radiator - known as the radiator core. As air travels over the pipes, either from the vehicle moving or because the radiator fan is sucking air through the radiator, the heat from the coolant is transferred to the air, and the cooled down coolant travels back to the engine. Radiators can develop leaks - either as a result of an object hitting the radiator and puncturing the outside, or because the coolant has not been replaced regularly and has become acidic - eating away the metal inside the radiator. A radiator that has become furred up inside to the point that coolant flow is restricted, or that is filled with debris so that air cannot flow across it, will not cool efficiently and can cause overheating. The alternator is connected to the accessory drive belt system. As the belt turns, it spins the alternator. The alternator produces an AC voltage that is converted to DC voltage by the bridge rectifier. A normal output voltage of the alternator is 14.4 volts -- enough to charge a 12 volt battery. When a vehicle is started, current flows from the closed ignition switch to the starter solenoid. Sometimes the park/neutral safety switch is placed in this circuit and will only allow current to the starter if the transmission is placed in Park or Neutral. Once the starter solenoid is activated, it pushes the starter pinion gear outwards so that is engaged with the flywheel ring gear. At the same time, it also allows current to flow to the starter motor, causing the pinion gear to spin. The spinning pinion gear rotates the flywheel until the engine can rotate on its own. Click this link below to check out a short video of the charging system!

For the engine to run correctly, the valves must open at the correct time for fuel and air to enter the combustion chamber, close while the fuel is compressed, remain closed as the piston is pushed down by the combustion, and then open to allow the exhaust gas out of the engine. The timing belt drives the valves to open and close at the correct time. Some vehicles use a metal chain or gears to drive the valves, however, timing belts, made out of lighter weight rubber, are generally quieter in operation, and more fuel efficient because the engine is driving less weight. Timing belts are generally not visible without removing several components and covers. The belt should be replaced at manufacturer recommended intervals, usually 60, 90 or 105,000 miles, or when inspection of the belt shows signs of wear. On some vehicles, the timing belt drives the water pump and must be removed to change the water pump. Since timing belt replacement is often a time consuming job, it is often advisable to replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt. Other parts replaced at the same time may include the tensioner assembly that keeps the timing belt tight, and any other pulleys that the timing belt rolls around. When a timing belt breaks, the vehicle will be undriveable, and in many situations, the broken timing belt will also result in internal engine damage such as bent valves.
