Are Volkswagen and Audi reliable?

The EA888 is the 2.0L turbocharged engine found in VW and Audi vehicles from 2007 to present you’ve got them in Golf GTI, Golf R, Passat, Tiguan, Audi A3, A4, A5, and TT. Every generation had its own known issue.

Here’s a list of common engine issues for cars like the Audi a4 and VW gti by generation:

EA888 Gen 1 — Timing chain. The tensioner lacked a safety ratchet. Chain jumps, engine breaks.

EA888 Gen 2 — Oil consumption. Piston rings too thin, drainage holes too small. In bad cases, 1L per 500km. The only real fix is an engine rebuild with updated pistons.

EA888 Gen 3 — Water pump and thermostat housing. Plastic housing warps from heat cycling. Leaks are frequent and predictable. The MK7 and MK7.5 are otherwise the most reliable GTI generation in decades — this is the one thing that gets them.

EA888 Gen 4 (MK7.5, MK8) — So far the cleanest generation. Not seeing the same failures on the same timeline.

BMW N20 Timing Replacement ⛓️‍💥

The 2012–2015 BMW N20 known failure point is timing chain. Metallic Rattling or Clattering Sounds at a cold start, idle or during acceleration are all symptoms of timing chain issues.

The N20 timing chain issue affects the F30 328i, 428i, 528i, X1, X3, and Z4

Engine side:
The N20 factory plastic timing chain guides degrade from heat cycling. When they break, the chain loses tension — it can jump timing or snap entirely.

Oil system side:
Shattered n20 guide fragments fall into the oil pan and get pulled into the oil pump pickup tube. That restricts flow and starves the engine of oil pressure and total engine failure.

Caught early, this is a straightforward preventative repair.
