It is with great sadness that we share the passing of renowned aviation artist Gary Velasco, a cherished friend of the Capital Wing.

Gary’s extraordinary talent brought aviation history to life through his artwork, capturing the spirit, courage, and beauty of flight in a way few could. Gary was responsible for painting the nose art on our TBM Avenger, Doris Mae. Beyond his remarkable artistic legacy, Gary will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and enduring friendship with so many throughout the aviation community.

We extend our deepest condolences to Gary’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his life and work. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue to soar through the countless lives he inspired and the timeless art he created.

REPORT FOR DUTY ✈️🇺🇸

No amount of pictures or video really captures what this felt like.

One moment stepping aboard the Fairchild UC-61 Forwarder… the next reporting for duty aboard TBM-3E Avenger “Doris Mae.”

Mission briefing. Engine start. Crew positions. Wheels up.

Walking the flightline, hearing the engines, climbing inside, and imagining the stories behind these aircraft felt less like watching history… and more like becoming part of it.

These aren’t just airplanes—they’re living history because of the people who continue to preserve, restore, and share them.

Grateful for the experience and everyone who makes moments like this possible.

Honored to see the Warbird Expo at Shenandoah Valley Airport featured on the news this weekend!

What an incredible couple of days celebrating aviation history, hearing these historic engines come to life, and watching people experience these aircraft up close — some even taking flight in them.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out to support the event, the volunteers, pilots, crews, and the Commemorative Air Force Capital Wing for keeping history alive and flying. 🇺🇸✈️🚁

Inside the cockpit of the legendary Aérospatiale Alouette II — where every gauge, switch, and vibration tells a story. 🚁✨

A raw, mechanical kind of flying that modern aircraft just can’t replicate. From the bubble canopy views to the unmistakable sound of the rotor overhead, this was aviation at its purest.
