Plenty of RVers assume that because they sleep in their rig, it gets the same Fourth Amendment protection as a house. The Supreme Court has already ruled otherwise.

In a 1985 case, federal agents searched a motorhome in a public lot with no warrant and no consent. The owner argued it was his residence. The Court sided with the agents.

*But that's not the whole story.*

Courts have also thrown out searches of RVs, including one parked in a neighborhood and plugged into a utility pole.

Here's the thing: a few specific factors can influence which way it goes, and most of them have nothing to do with whether you call it home.

There's also a common assumption about fi****ms and traffic stops that a federal appeals court recently shot down.
