With the coming cold weather everyone is preparing their home. BUT, have you prepared your CAR?
Your vehicle should have some type of antifreeze in the cooling system. Antifreeze is a special mix of chemicals and water that are made to run through the engine while absorbing heat and keeping it cool. It is also made to not freeze. If you have just water in your vehicle you should replace it with the proper coolant/antifreeze. Water expands when it freezes and will destroy hoses, radiators, and other parts if that happens.
Please save yourself a big headache! Make sure your coolant reservoir and radiator are topped up with antifreeze!

This week’s tip for a smoother inspection is going to be about Windshield Wipers.
One thing I do feel I need to mention is that the front windshield is NOT part of the inspection anymore.
Now, on to the main event.
Most people do not realize that YES, WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE PART OF THE TEXAS SAFETY INSPECTION.
Windshield wipers provide a way for you to maintain a clear windshield during adverse weather conditions. That is why they are essential to the safety of the car.
Wipers must:
1. Be in good condition.
2. Operate freely and as the manufacturer intended.
3. Clean the windshield properly.
New wipers should feel smooth, be pliable, and show no damage.
Wipers only last about a year down here in the South Texas heat. Unless the car is being kept out of the heat in a garage, they should be replaced annually.
These are just a few examples of how the wipers can fail. Some will fall apart. Some will shrink with the heat.
If you do find you need new wipers, even if it is not inspection time, we will be happy to help you get replacements and install them.
Any questions about inspections? You can call us at 361-888-8959 or stop by the shop.
From Your Friendly Neighborhood Inspector. 😊

We had a customer come in, complaining of a vibration, most notably when braking. They had recently had a brake job performed at a well-known chain. Upon inspection of the tires, brakes and rotors, it was discovered that the rotors had not been serviced properly, and were warped. When a rotor is warped, it is the same as a vinyl record warping, where there are waves in the surface. They cannot be seen easily but can be felt in the vibrations. As seen in the photos, there are areas where the metal is shinier than other spots, where the metal is wearing more from the pads.
To correct this problem, we use a brake lathe to resurface the rotors. It will cut a thin layer off the surface of the rotor. This may need to be done several times, each time taking a small amount off until it is even, while taking the least amount off.
This video is of the first pass of the lathe on one of the problem rotors. Notice how it is only removing a small uneven area. This is the top of one of the more pronounced waves.
Rotors should usually be resurfaced when the brakes are serviced, unless they are at the minimum thickness or severely damaged. At which point they should be replaced.
