Once again, South Texas Diesel and Automotive saved the day! When I tried to start my truck this morning, the key fob didn't work to unlock the doors. Me, being all smart, unlocked the doors manually and hopped in to start the truck and my day. Alarms, horn honking, and no juice to start the truck! Luckily, I'd had another key made before leaving Arizona. It stopped all the alarms and started the truck. I'm feeling smug. I run up the road to the local hardware store for a battery for the key fob. Ten bucks and two new batteries later....Nada, zilch,zip. I had to get a new key fob. I think... easy peasy. I call a local locksmith (Discount Locksmith in Corpus) who says sure, we can hook ya up. Run across the bridge, key guy makes the new key in like ten seconds and plugs in the computer to program it. Ten minutes... twenty minutes... thirty minutes....struggles with the program, but hey I've got nothing but time. Finally, the nice locksmith gets the keys programmed, tells me the new key is in the ignition, truck is running to get cool, have a great day. I go out to leave and now... the truck won't go into gear. An alarm on the dash says to check my brake systems. Accusensor warning! I'm not moving! I go back into the lock place and ask if anything they've done could be causing this issue. Nice locksmith assured me the only thing they did was with the keys but he'll Google the alarms and see what he can find out. I Google it and see that if we disconnect the battery, the alarm/ sensor will reset and I can go to the nearest mechanic. We do that and NOTHING. I Google further. There's a bypass switch inside the steering column. Nice locksmith takes off the covers, locates the switch and voila... it goes in gear! He tells me to check my brake lights because they likely aren't working and of course, they are not! Determined....I plot the 4 miles to the mechanic, put on my hazard lights and hit the road. Now though... the transmission won't shift. A light bulb goes off in my head.... I've got manual shifting. So now, I'm driving on busy Texas roads, slowly with my hazards flashing, manually shifting my gears and praying no one hits me from the rear and that I don't get stopped for no brake lights. I arrive at Southwest Texas Diesel, and the whole crew has been taken out to lunch by the owner, so I wait. Shortly, Brandon arrived and looked at me like.... what are you doing here, we just changed your oil yesterday. ...I tell him my tale and he says don't worry, I'll get ya going soon. He spent the next couple of hours correctly rewiring and installing a new brake switch. He asks me some questions about some shoddy wiring in the truck, which I've no clue about. When the bill comes, I'm expecting $$$$ but I got $. Brandon tells me it was just the right thing to do and he's happy to have helped me out (AGAIN). He also says that hopefully this will solve my intermittent trailer brake issue that's kept me out of the mountains!! I cannot say enough good things about this service and company and owners!!
