PART 1 Project X- CRF250X Head Work & Conversion
So I decided to do some headwork on the 04’ Upon pulling the head, I inspected the head, cylinder, piston, etc. First thing I noticed was that shes been running just a lil rich producing a lil carbon build-up and also two “HOT SPOTS” on the piston (pic 1).
I checked the head combustion chamber and sure enough there were sharp edges coming straight from the factory, causing those “Hot Spots”. So I took some fine 400 grit sandpaper and smoothed out those edges (pic 2).
By the way I am running dual springs due to the high lift racing “Web Camshafts” so the stainless Kibblewhite valves don’t float at high rpm’s. www.webcamshafts.com (pic 3)
Now on the CRF250X head on the exhaust port, there is a emissions port (pic 4) in which we will be welding shut and then smoothing out at a later time. In the intake port (pic 5), there is a vacuum test port.
Normally you want to seal/weld this port closed as well, however I personally want to keep this open so I can fine tune the carb air screw for maximum efficiency as well as having it as an option to trouble shoot engine performance should there be any issues in the future.
As you can see I am cleaning out the carbon from the emissions port so when I close this port, the weld will hold (pic 6)
In Part 2 of this project I will share porting, reshaping the intake ports, roughing the intake ports, smoothing and polishing the exhaust, and more…stay tuned
