Santa's Nice List saves lives!

Dear Citizens of Cordele, Georgia:

It's true, I'm running for Cordele City Commission - At Large (Chairman). I appreciate the words of encouragement I received from my friends and neighbors when the news broke a few days ago.

Here are my feelings and objectives regarding my candidacy:

It is not required to claim an affiliation to a political party when running to hold a seat as a member of the Cordele City Commission. I believe that the two-party system is, by nature, a trap that keeps this city, this state and this country easily divided and hindered.

I encourage the electorate of Cordele to embrace the idea that it is possible to elect public servants on a local level who will justly serve the entire community. I seek to create an ethos outside of the long-standing and divisive two-party system. Continuing to view our society as a competitive board-game made of red and blue pieces will only lead us to more uncertainty, division and destruction.

Our country is entering an unprecedented era where technology and its potential can either help or destroy us. One of technology's destructive components is the ease at which it can misinform unsuspecting citizens with content that is designed to heighten one's emotions and essentially cement nonsense into our heads. The importance placed on partisan politics and the havoc that brings has diminished our willingness to trust each other, our institutions and sometimes even ourselves.

A vote for me this November 4th would serve as a move away from the vitriolic and divisive patterns which have kept this community from exhibiting a healthy discourse when exploring and finding solutions to Cordele's complex and sensitive issues.

No matter how "correct" or "comfortable" it may feel to continue to support the institutions and parties which have stunted our progress, it is time to consider a different approach. It is time to side-step the trap of partisan politics and show each other that we can transcend the built-in issues that cause us to cast judgement on folks we don't even know and instead give civility, honesty, receptivity and the hard work which generates true communal growth a fighting chance.

If I am selected to serve as your Commissioner - At Large, I will place the power into your hands by actively listening to and understanding the perspectives of every citizen willing to lift their voice regardless of their social standing, financial status, political position, appearance or whatever else is traditionally used to show favoritism.

I seek to preserve the attributes of our beloved rural community, while also helping us to move forward by facilitating a productive and judgement-free environment where effective communication can help reveal the policies and solutions needed to help our city develop gracefully, despite the differing politics of our citizens.

As human beings our similarities outnumber our differences. I believe that we need each other and that we can work together. It will not be easy, but working hard with neighborly love at the center, we hold immense power to make really cool things happen. We will achieve and provide much more for our city united as a community, than if one side were to conquer another.

I wish my fellow friends and citizens who are also running the very best of luck and may the best candidate to hold the office be elected.

Your friend and neighbor,

Ronald Michael

I'll Look at Your Facebook Profile Before I Tell Your Mother You're Dead - Dr. Louis M. Profeta, Emergency Room Physician, St. Vincent Hospital of Indianapolis

“It kind of keeps me human. You see, I’m about to change their lives; your mom and dad, that is. In about five minutes, they will never be the same, they will never be happy again. Right now, to be honest, you’re just a nameless dead body that feels like a wet bag of newspapers that we have been pounding on, sticking IV lines and tubes and needles in, trying desperately to save you. There’s no motion, no life, nothing to tell me you once had dreams or aspirations. I owe it to them to learn just a bit about you before I go in.

Because right now . . . all I am is mad at you, for what you did to yourself and what you are about to do to them.

I know nothing about you. I owe it to your mom to peek inside of your once-living world.

Maybe you were texting instead of watching the road, or you were drunk when you should have Ubered. Perhaps you snorted he**in or Xanax for the first time or a line of coke, tried m**h or popped a Vicodin at the campus party and did a couple shots. Maybe you just rode your bike without a helmet or didn’t heed your parents’ warning when they asked you not to hang out with that “friend,” or to be more cautious when coming to a four-way stop. Maybe you just gave up.

Maybe it was just your time, but chances are . . . it wasn’t.

So I pick up your faded picture of your driver’s license and click on my iPhone, flip to Facebook and search your name. Chances are we’ll have one mutual friend somewhere. I know a lot of people.

I see you wearing the same necklace and earrings that now sit in a specimen cup on the counter, the same ball cap or jacket that has been split open with trauma scissors and pulled under the backboard, the lining stained with blood. Looks like you were wearing it to the U2 concert. I heard it was great.

I see your smile, how it should be, the color of eyes when they are filled with life, your time on the beach, blowing out candles, Christmas at Grandma’s; oh you have a Maltese, too. I see that. I see you standing with your mom and dad in front of the sign to your college. Good, I’ll know exactly who they are when I walk into the room. It makes it that much easier for me, one less question I need to ask.

You’re kind of lucky that you don’t have to see it. Dad screaming your name over and over, mom pulling her hair out, curled up on the floor with her hand over her head as if she’s trying to protect herself from unseen blows.

I check your page before I tell them you’re dead because it reminds me that I am talking about a person, someone they love; it quiets the voice in my head that is screaming at you right now shouting: ‘How could you do this to them, to people you are supposed to love!’”

For the love of God, put down your phone, slow down, come to a complete stop, wear your seatbelt, go the speed limit, and drive like your life depends on it. Because it does. And if that’s not enough, drive like other peoples’ lives depend on it...because it does.

Don’t ruin your family’s or our holiday season...
