The level of expertise you get at a large brokerage and what you get at a boutique are very different, at a boutique, you’ll always have a senior yacht broker looking after your deal, regardless of whom in the team you’re working with.
Most large brokerages don’t take the time to properly train their new brokers. The person who picks up
your call may be capable, but they likely haven’t gone up against a broker with real experience in a live negotiation — and they won’t carry the kind of deep knowledge about a specific boat that comes from years in the category.
At MMG, you either work with me directly or with a specialist who has that deep category
knowledge — and that specialist always brings me into the deal. Two experienced people
working on the same deal find better results than one.

The size of a brokerage tells you nothing about the quality of advice you’re getting.

The survey came back with findings. He accepted the vessel as-is when there was clearly 4 legit things to negotiate, things the seller just did not do to save money.

This is one of the most common mistakes I see from inexperienced brokers and buyers. The other big mistake is walking from a good boat/deal just because the survey list has 30 items on it.
Every survey has findings. The question isn’t how many. It’s which category each one falls
into.

Deal-breakers change the fundamental decision. Cosmetic findings are noise. The items in
between — the ones the surveyor noted but didn’t flag as critical — that’s where your
negotiating position lives before the Accept/Reject Date.

What most buyers don’t realize about the survey.

The scope is yours to define. You choose the surveyors. You tell them how deep to go (so long as it’s non-destructive).
On a larger vessel, a full-scope survey can run multiple days — hull and structure, all mechanical
systems, electrical, plumbing, safety equipment, electronics. Some bring in specialist
subcontractors for special cases.
The report that comes back is yours. The surveyor works for you.
What you do with it is the decision that actually matters. Under the IYBA agreement, you have
until your Accept/Reject Date to tell the seller yes, no, or to propose new terms based on
what you found.
That window — and what you do inside it — is where deals are made or walked away from.

The $4M–$6M market is split right now — and the split is very Black & white in this 85-100ft brokerage market.
What’s moving: RPH and flybridge motoryachts from builders like Princess, Sanlorenzo, OA,
Ferretti, and Sunseeker. 2019 and newer. Good layout, well-maintained, solid presentation.
When the right one surfaces, serious buyers compete for it. The window is days, not months.
What’s sitting: boats with the wrong cabin count for their size, no on-deck day head, known heavy
charter history, or cosmetic neglect that signals the boat hasn’t been cared for. Some of those
are real value. Most have been passed over for a reason — and that reason doesn’t go away.
The mistake is treating them as the same market because they share a price range.

Read the inventory correctly and you stop wasting time on the wrong boats
