**Before you slow down, do you know what is happening behind you?**

Your mirrors help you understand the traffic around your car. Checking them before a planned reduction in speed can help you brake smoothly and anticipate the actions of vehicles behind.

Build this habit into your driving:

✅ **Look ahead first.** Identify junctions, queues, bends or hazards that may require you to slow down.

✅ **Check your mirrors.** Be aware of how close the following vehicle is and whether traffic is changing around you.

✅ **Brake progressively when possible.** Smooth braking gives following drivers more opportunity to respond.

✅ **Keep checking your surroundings.** Traffic conditions can change quickly, especially near junctions and queues.

✅ **Prioritise immediate hazards.** If you must brake suddenly to avoid danger, do not delay necessary braking just to complete a mirror check.

Remember that mirror checks are not a substitute for keeping a safe following distance. You cannot control how closely another driver follows you, but you can remain aware and avoid unnecessary sudden movements.

Good observation means understanding what is happening ahead, behind and beside your vehicle.
