TEST DRIVING A USED VEHICLE?
Most people hop in, hit the gas, and hope for the best...
But if you want to avoid headaches (and surprise repair bills), hereās the full checklist I'd use before testādrive anything
šµ THE QUICK 3āSTEP PREāDRIVE CHECK
š 1. Pop the Hood (10 seconds is enough)
Youāre not diagnosing anything ā just look for:
- Wet or shiny spots (leaks)
- Burnt smells
- Low fluids
If something looks off, ask. A good dealership wonāt get weird about it
š§ 2. Start the Car Cold ā Not Warmed Up
Cold starts reveal the truth:
- Rough idle
- Knocking/ticking
- Slow cranking
If it struggles cold, itāll struggle for you later
š 3. Turn the Wheel All the Way Left & Right
Listen for:
- Clicking ā CV axle
- Grinding ā suspension
- Groaning ā power steering
Those repairs arenāt cheap

š 4. Test the Brakes at Different Speeds
Feel for:
- Pulsing (warped rotors)
- Grinding (worn pads)
- Pulling left/right (alignment or caliper issues)
Keep in mind if a vehicle has been sitting a while rust on the rotors forms, but this will go away after a couple hard brakes. If it persists its a bigger issue!
š£ļø 5. Get It Up to 40ā50 MPH
Thatās where hidden issues show up:
- Vibrations
- Wheel bearing noise
- Transmission hesitation
- Steering drift
If they keep you on a tiny test drive loop, thatās a red flag
š”ļø 6. Watch the Temperature Gauge
It should rise⦠then stay steady.
If it creeps up, walk away ā cooling system repairs get pricey fast
š 7. Turn Off the Radio
Silence tells the truth
Listen for rattles, whining, clunks, or wind noise
š§ 8. Test Every Button & Feature
Windows, heat/AC, backup camera, wipers, sunroof, power seats, Bluetooth ā all of it.
A $20 switch can cost $300+ in labor
š 9. Check the Tires for Uneven Wear
Uneven tread = alignment or suspension issues.
Thatās negotiation leverage ā or a reason to wal
š 10. Smell the Interior
Yes, really.
- Mold = leaks
- Burnt smell = electrical issues
- Heavy air freshener = someoneās hiding something
Your nose is a diagnostic tool!
