ARE WE HEADING INTO ANOTHER 1997 ON TUG HILL?! ❄️

Been reading about this coming El Niño and there’s actually some pretty interesting stuff for us on Tug Hill.

NOAA is saying there’s over a 90% chance this turns into a VERY strong El Niño for the 2026-27 winter, and a 69% chance it reaches historic strength.

Now everyone remembers 1997…

Redfield recorded around 424” of snow during the 96-97 season.

Then January 11-13, 1997 Montague got around 90” in 3 days, with the famous 77” in 24 hours report. Over 6 FEET in a day. 🤯

Now before the weather guys come after me 😂 — that storm was actually BEFORE the big 97-98 Super El Niño really took over.

And the weird part is the actual 97-98 El Niño winter wasn’t nearly as snowy overall in some parts of Tug Hill.

BUT this is where it gets interesting for us.

Studies of El Niño winters around Central NY have found they can start warmer and less snowy, then turn colder and snowier later on. One study even found major snow events were more than 5 TIMES as likely during El Niño winters.

And obviously Tug Hill has something most places don’t…

Lake Ontario. Or Lake America depending on what day of the week it is… 🌊❄️

If we have a warmer start to winter, that can keep the lake warmer and open longer. Then all we need is some good Arctic air, the winds to line up, and you know what happens up here…

The snow machine turns on. 😂

So this could be one of those weird winters where everyone is complaining there’s no snow one week, then we’re digging out from 3-4 feet the next.

Does that mean we’re getting another 1997? Absolutely no way to know yet.

But it’s definitely making this winter pretty damn interesting to watch. 👀❄️
