All of the final welding is done. Welds ground smooth and where visible filled and sanded ready for primer. While the trunk floor is still out, I took advantage to spray on sprayable sound deadener to the inside of both quarter panels just like Ma Mopar did at the factory.

Because the owner already purchased a reproduction 2 piece trunk floor (that he wants me to use) that doesn't have a lip at the rear that ties the bottom of the tail light panel to the rear crossmember closing this gap, I fabricated pieces out of 18 ga. sheet metal and plug welded them in place. I will strep the new trunk floor pans at the rear edge and plug weld them to these strips. Once seam sealed, it will all look very close to factory.

Next up is to mock the rear crossmember and cut down frame rail sections in place and make reinforcing plates to fit on the inside of the frame rails at the splice. These will be both plug or rosette welded through the fame rails and also welded from the inside making the splice stronger than the factory rails. We decided to do the splices here to save the factory gas tank support crossmember and the upper shock support crossmember that are in great shape.

Here are all the new reproduction parts needed to replace the rear tail light panel, crossmember, crossmember extensions, frame rails, rear springer hanger assemblies and bumper bracket reinforcements. Step one is to burn in the new tail light panel, making sure to maintain the correct opening width for the trunk lid.

With they bodywork, panel alignment and gapping done while the car was sitting on its suspension and they car sprayed in 3 coats of DTM primer-surfacer, its time to remove the suspension for rebuilding and tackle the rust repair in the trunk. With the car leveled on jack stands, the rusted rear light panel, crossmember, rear spring hangers and a portion of both rear frame rails are cut out as an assembly. Drilling out the factory spot welds and a little trimming and grinding and the tail light panel is ready for test fitting. Obviously much more to follow as the rear end rust repair continues.

Another problem with the hood was that the holes for the front hood pins were drilled (hacked) in the wrong place (they actually lined up directly over where the front hood bumpers-adjusters are located). The fix involved using fiberglass and resin to close over the old holes on the skin, panel bonding small sheet metal plates over the holes on the underside of the hood to give a strong landing point for the front hood bumpers, and drilling new holes in the correct position for the front hood pins. Once everything was right, the underside of the hood gets a couple of coats of epoxy primer.

The aftermarket fiberglass hood the owner had resembles a factory '69 1/2 A12 lift off hood with some minor differences (scoop is slightly different and there is no raised area between the front of the scoop and leading edge of hood). In any case, as with many aftermarket fiberglass parts it had chips, spider cracks in the gelcoat, didn't fit the opening properly and needed a lot of body work to get it straight. The photos show the sequence of repairing it an getting the gaps good.

With the quarter panel extensions fitted and faired into the quarters, I decide to verify the fitment of the actual tail light housings and bezels. Good thing I did, because somewhere between removal, storage, powder coating (satin black) and delivery to RBG by the owner, the bezels were severely distorted and the mounting lugs did not line up with the mounting holes in the tail light housings, nor land flush on the bases. Because these are cast pot metal items and freshly powder coated I had to be super careful straightening them. I succeeded without any damage and after restoring the housings, gluing in new gaskets and assembling the whole shebang, they fit great. I will now pre fit all of the black powder coated exterior trim before finalizing body work.
