Today, we honor the life and legacy of William “Bill” Suntrup, or as so many of us around here have always known him, simply “Uncle Bill.”
In 1957, Bill founded what would become the Suntrup name in the automotive business. A few years later, his brother Don joined him before eventually beginning his own automotive business. From those early beginnings, the Suntrup name has grown into a nearly 70-year legacy in the St. Louis automotive community, carried on by generations of family and countless people who have worked for the Suntrup organizations over the years.
For those of us who come to work under the Suntrup name every day, Bill’s passing is a reminder of where so much of our own story began. His vision, work ethic, and willingness to take that first step in 1957 helped create opportunities that would reach generations beyond him.
And what a legacy he leaves behind. Bill was the father of seven, grandfather of 22, and great-grandfather of 21. He and his beloved wife, Mary Jule, shared 70 years of marriage and built a family rooted in faith, hard work, loyalty, and caring for others.
His impact extended far beyond his family and the automotive business. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran, an accomplished athlete, a philanthropist, and a generous supporter of the St. Louis community. Those closest to him remember a man who loved people, valued his relationships, and believed in treating others the way he would want to be treated.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Bill’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, the entire Suntrup family, and everyone who knew and loved him.
Thank you, Uncle Bill, for taking that first step in 1957. Nearly seven decades later, generations of family and employees have been given opportunities because of the path you began.
We are proud to carry the Suntrup name and grateful for the legacy behind it.
