Are we going to tell you every older car is worth fixing?

No.

Sometimes putting more money into a vehicle really doesn't make sense.

Major structural rust can be one reason.

A vehicle facing several major repairs at the same time can be another.

Or perhaps the vehicle simply doesn't meet your needs anymore.

Our job isn't to convince you to repair everything.

Our job is to give you enough information about the condition of the whole vehicle to make an informed decision.

If we believe the vehicle is solid and worth repairing, we'll explain why.

If we think the money may be better saved toward another vehicle, we'll tell you that too.

There is another cost to replacing an older vehicle that is easy to overlook:

You know the vehicle you have. You don't necessarily know the used vehicle you're buying.

If you have owned your car for several years and kept up with maintenance and repairs, you probably know what has already been replaced, how it has been maintained and how it normally drives.

Buying another used car doesn't eliminate repair costs.

You may buy a great vehicle. Or you may find out six months later that it needs tires, brakes, a battery or a repair you weren't expecting.

Sometimes replacing a known vehicle simply means starting over with an unknown one.

That doesn't mean you should never replace an older car. It just needs to be part of the decision.

There is one thing that can change our answer pretty quickly when someone asks whether an older vehicle is worth repairing:

Rust.

Here in New Hampshire, years of winter driving and road salt can eventually take a serious toll.

Some rust is cosmetic. Rusted brakes, suspension components and other replaceable parts can also be repaired.

But serious deterioration of the frame, subframes, suspension mounting points or other structural areas is different.

A vehicle can have a great engine and transmission but still reach a point where putting thousands of dollars into another major repair no longer makes good sense because the structure is nearing the end of its safe useful life.

That is why we don't believe in deciding whether a car is worth repairing based on today's failed part alone.

We need to look at the whole vehicle.

We explain what we found.

We document the condition.

We show you the measurement or specification when possible.

And we provide an estimate for the repair.

If you decide not to repair it, we'll document that the repair was declined as well.

We're not law enforcement, and our job isn't to scare customers into buying repairs.

Our responsibility is to give you accurate information about your vehicle so you can make an informed decision.

But if a tire, brake, steering component, wheel bearing, or ball joint has reached a condition where New Hampshire law says the vehicle should no longer be operated, we're going to make that clear.

No warning light does not mean everything underneath your car is OK.

Most of the safety items covered by New Hampshire's new vehicle laws will never turn on a dashboard warning light.

A worn tire has to be measured.

Brake friction material has to be inspected.

Wheel-bearing looseness, ball-joint wear, and excessive steering free play may only be found during a proper physical inspection.

With annual state safety inspections gone, regular maintenance visits are now one of the best opportunities to catch these problems early.

“My car is only worth $5,000. Why would I put $6,000 into repairing it?”

It sounds like a simple decision, but vehicle value is more complicated than that.

If you are fixing the car today just to trade it tomorrow, we would probably agree that putting thousands into it doesn't make sense.

But if you like the vehicle, know its history, it is structurally sound and you plan to keep driving it for another 2, 3 or even 5 years, that becomes a very different calculation.

A repair doesn't have to add the same amount to the vehicle's resale value to be worthwhile.

The value may be several more years of safe, dependable transportation without taking on another car payment.

That is why we believe the better question is:

What is the least expensive reasonable way to have a safe, reliable vehicle for the next several years?

“Is it really worth putting this much money into my car?”

We hear that question a lot, especially when a repair estimate gets into the thousands.

But there is another question that is just as important:

What would it cost to replace your current vehicle with something equally safe, reliable and useful?

A $3,000 or $5,000 repair sounds like a lot of money because you see the entire number at once. But replacing the vehicle may mean spending $15,000, $20,000, $30,000 or more, along with payments, interest, registration, insurance and depreciation.

If the vehicle is structurally sound, fits your needs and should give you several more years of reliable service after the repair, fixing what you already own can still make a lot of financial sense.

A loose ball joint or wheel bearing may now be more than just a repair recommendation.

New Hampshire's new vehicle safety law specifically addresses:

• Steering linkage free play beyond manufacturer specifications
• Wheel bearings outside manufacturer tolerance for looseness
• Ball joints that are broken, cracked, or beyond manufacturer specifications

One important part of the law is the phrase:

Manufacturer specifications.

There isn't one universal amount of looseness that's acceptable for every vehicle.

If one of these conditions is beyond the legal standard, the vehicle should not continue to be operated on NH roads until it is corrected.

How low is legally too low for your tires in New Hampshire?

The answer is now clear:

2/32 of an inch.

Under the new law, every tire on the vehicle must have at least 2/32" of tread remaining.

That is the legal minimum. It does not mean 2/32" is necessarily the point we would recommend waiting until, especially with New Hampshire rain, snow, and slush.

Tire tread has a major effect on stopping distance and your ability to move water and snow away from the contact patch.

Your brakes now have a specific legal minimum in New Hampshire.

Brake pads and brake shoes must have at least:

2/32" of friction material

That applies at each wheel.

But there is an important difference between a legal minimum and a good maintenance plan.

Waiting until your brakes reach the absolute minimum leaves very little room for unexpected wear, uneven wear, sticking calipers, or other brake problems.

The goal should be to find and plan for brake wear before it becomes urgent.
