Never lease a car. Never.

Your payments are calculated by totaling up the expected depreciation plus tax and additional fees, then dividing that total by the number of months in the lease. That’s right, depreciation is built into your lease payments. And since cars lose the most value in the first two to three years, you’re stupidly picking up that tab.

When the lease is up, you’ll fork over even more for back-end charges like a disposition fee (the cost of cleaning up and selling the car) and any excessive mileage or wear-and-tear fees. Straight-up highway robbery. What stings is the fact that you’ll likely have paid more than the car’s actual depreciation during the lease period. And at the end of all that, you still don’t even own a car—you have to give it back to the dealer after paying the worst of the depreciation!
