Do you have to plug the throttle body coolant passages? No. If you want to be undetectable in a pure stock environment, you leave the coolant hoses hooked up with the passages plugged. However, it kills coolant flow through the heater core so plan on summer fun only with this old school mod on the L98's.

Pete McCarthy, the legendary “Pontiac Guy,” passed away this week, and the Pontiac community lost a giant.

As a younger Pontiac engine builder and engineer, I grew up with Pete’s books in my hands and his knowledge in my head. From porting techniques and cylinder head flow to the real-world history of Pontiac performance, his writings taught me more than any class or dyno session ever could. He turned pages of dry specs into practical wisdom I still use every time I build an engine.

Thank you, Pete. You kept the flame alive for generations of us who came after the muscle car era. Your work will live on in every Pontiac that’s built better because of what you shared.

Rest in peace and truth, sir. The Pontiac community is forever in your debt.

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Peter J. “Pete” McCarthy on Thursday, May 7th, 2026. He peacefully passed due to natural causes at the age of 92. Pete was a renowned figure in the Pro Stock NHRA racing circuit. For over three decades, he skillfully maneuvered Pontiac Firebirds and GTOs during the muscle car era. He co-authored and published two highly acclaimed how-to books: “Pontiac Racers High Performance Handbook” and “Pontiac Musclecar Performance 1955-1979.” In addition to these best-selling books, he produced the immensely popular “Performance Porting” video.

Pete was an accomplished athlete during his college years, excelling in basketball at Michigan State University. His father, Maurice, was a professional golfer, and Pete joined him in numerous tournaments during the 1950s. On October 1st, 1953, Pete enlisted in the United States Navy, where he received several commendation medals during his four-year service to our nation. He was honorably discharged as a radio operator in San Diego and promptly transitioned to a career in radio at KFMX in San Diego. It was there that he acquired knowledge of advertising, which ultimately led him to a 20-year career with the Pacific Bell Yellow Pages, where he served as union president. While at Pacific Bell, he met Jane Osterholm, whom he later married on St. Patrick’s Day, 1996. Together, they became a formidable force in the publishing industry, spearheading Pontiac Enthusiast Magazine with Pete as the editor and Jane as General Manager of subscriptions. They traveled extensively across the country, promoting the magazine at numerous Pontiac Drag Day events and forging enduring friendships along the way.

In his later years, Pete found solace in the company of water, particularly Dana Point Harbor and nearby lakes. He will be remembered for his commanding presence, coupled with a resonant, booming baritone voice and a “no filter” personality.

A private remembrance ceremony will be held for family members only, in accordance with Pete’s wishes.
