WHAT DOES THAT PART ACTUALLY DO?

If you joined us for Guess the Part Saturday, you already know those stacked pieces of curved steel are called leaf springs.

But what do they actually do?

On a truck like this 2002 Ford F-150, the leaf springs are a major part of the rear suspension. They help support the weight of the truck and its load, keep the rear axle properly positioned, and allow the suspension to move as you drive over bumps and uneven roads.

And here's the clever part:

A leaf spring isn't just one giant spring.

It's made from several long pieces of spring steel called leaves stacked together. As the suspension moves, those leaves flex under load and then return toward their original shape.

That's part of what makes them such a good fit for trucks. They're relatively simple, extremely strong, and can handle the additional weight that comes with passengers, cargo and towing.

But they don't last forever.

Leaf springs can eventually crack, break, sag, shift or develop worn bushings and hardware. Depending on what's happening, you might notice the truck sitting lower on one side, unusual noises from the rear suspension, changes in handling, or movement that just doesn't feel right.

And one important distinction:

The leaf spring and the shock absorber aren't doing the same job.

The spring supports the vehicle and allows suspension movement. The shock helps control that movement so the truck doesn't continue bouncing after every bump.

They work together but they have very different jobs.

So the next time you're behind a pickup and spot that stack of curved steel above the rear axle, you'll know exactly what you're looking at.

Yesterday’s mystery part was… a LEAF SPRING!

And no, despite the name, it has absolutely nothing to do with leaves. 😂

This one came off a 2002 Ford F-150 - and if you guessed suspension, you were definitely headed in the right direction.

Leaf springs have been holding up trucks and hauling loads for a very long time, and there’s more going on with this stack of curved steel than you might think.

Under the Hood Tuesday: What Does an Intake Manifold Actually Do?

If you played Guess the Part with us this weekend, you already know this strange-looking piece is an intake manifold.

But what does it actually do?

Your engine needs three basic things to run: air, fuel, and spark.

The intake manifold is part of the path that gets that incoming air where it needs to go. Air enters through the intake system, passes through the throttle body, and the manifold distributes it through individual passages — called runners — to the engine's cylinders.

Think of it a little like a hallway with several doors. Air comes in through one entrance, and the manifold provides a path to each cylinder.

And that makes something else really important:

The intake system needs to stay sealed.

If outside air sneaks in through a cracked component, loose connection, or leaking intake manifold gasket, that air may not be properly accounted for by the engine management system.

Now the computer can find itself trying to correct an air/fuel mixture that isn't behaving the way it expects.

Depending on the vehicle and the problem, that can contribute to things like a rough idle, poor performance, lean-running conditions, misfires, or a check engine light.

But here's our favorite part:

Those symptoms don't automatically mean the intake manifold is bad.

A vacuum leak, sensor problem, fuel-delivery issue, ignition problem, wiring fault, or several other conditions can sometimes produce similar symptoms.

That's why a symptom — or even a trouble code — is the beginning of the investigation, not the diagnosis.

So that weird-looking part from Saturday?

It's normally tucked away under the hood quietly helping your engine breathe.
