I recently fielded a question from a customer about the ethanol that they mix with our gas.
They said, "everybody used to talk about the ethanol mixed gas we get, but it doesn't cause problems anymore, does it?"
Sadly, it is still a problem. The ethanol in our gas dries out rubber o-rings, seals and gaskets and helps corrosion develop in our fuel systems.
The problem now is we can't avoid using it, while you used to find some stations that didn't have it, that time is long since past.
So, the question becomes, "what can we do?"
We can't avoid the damage it causes, but keeping fresh fuel in the tank and keeping the tank full will certainly help. Bikes with a carb will need it rebuilt more often than in the past, fuel injected bikes may have more injector problems than they would have.
A top quality fuel additive like BG's 44k is a great choice to help reduce the problems. It will help carb and fuel injected bikes alike, reducing the corrosion, keeping fuel passages cleaner in the carb or injectors.
Long story short...
Is it a problem? Yes!
Can we avoid it? No!
Can we reduce it's impact? Yes!
