Those pouch-like shapes hanging under the cloud deck are called mammatus.
They form when cold air sinks beneath the anvil of a thunderstorm. They’re not a separate cloud type — just a dramatic feature that often shows up after the strongest part of the storm has passed.
Mammatus doesn’t mean hail is falling at that exact moment, but they frequently appear with the same powerful storms that produce it. Strong updrafts keep ice particles aloft long enough to grow into hailstones before gravity finally wins.
If recent storms left your vehicle with dents, we specialize in paintless dent repair here in Colorado Springs.
