Towing with confidence starts with knowing your numbers: not guessing. 🛻

A quick towing refresher for Colorado Springs truck and SUV owners:

• Towing capacity is the maximum trailer weight your vehicle is rated to pull. Always use the trailer’s loaded weight, not its empty or advertised weight.
• Payload is the weight the vehicle itself can carry: including passengers, cargo, hitch equipment, and the trailer’s tongue weight. Tongue weight commonly accounts for about 10–15% of a properly balanced trailer.
• Check the owner’s manual for the vehicle’s exact tow rating and recommended equipment. The door-jamb sticker typically lists GVWR and axle ratings, which help confirm how much total weight the vehicle can safely handle.
• Hitch classes and receiver sizes matter. Class I and II commonly use a 1¼-inch receiver, while Class III and IV often use a 2-inch receiver. Class V commonly uses a 2½-inch receiver: but the vehicle, hitch, ball mount, and trailer ratings must all work together.
• Larger or heavier trailers may require trailer brakes. Make sure the brake controller and trailer connection are set up correctly before moving.

Before hooking up, verify the loaded trailer weight, tongue weight, hitch rating, tires, lights, safety chains, and brake requirements in the owner’s manual. When in doubt, stop and check: safe towing is worth the extra minute.
