We had this boat trailer in the shop with a major axle failure! The axle broke right where the spindle was welded to the tube. We replaced the 2,000 lb axle with a 3,500 lb axle.

We see this a lot with boat trailers—some manufacturers just don’t put heavy enough axles under them.

The worst part? His axle broke while he was backing his boat down the ramp to go fishing for the day. Unfortunately, that ended his fishing trip before it even started.

The boat came to us on a Tuesday, and we had the new axle built and installed by Thursday afternoon!

Had a Peterbilt 379 in for a leaking rear drive wheel seal. After tearing it down, we found worn spindles that someone had previously tried to patch up to get by.

We recommended having the worn spindles cut off and replaced, and the customer gave us the go-ahead. We also installed new ConMet PreSet Plus hubs.

Here’s a little fact some may not know about these slotted axle nuts.

The 6-slot nut is designed for a tang washer, and the 12-slot nut is designed for a cotter pin.

The 6-slot nut can also work with a cotter pin, but getting the slot lined up with the hole can be difficult sometimes. The 12-slot nut will not work with the tang washer.

6-slot nut: Part #165686
12-slot nut: Part #6-176
Both nuts have 1″-14 threads.

These nuts are used on axles rated from 2,200 to 7,000 lb, as well as some 7,200 and 8,000 lb axles.
