Electric car owners are not subject to paying traditional fuel taxes associated with a traditional gas powered vehicles. As a result, a new fee is being implemented for EV & PHEV owners.

ACT 85 & 149-- Starting 4/1/25 PA will begin to charge electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) owners a yearly "Road User Charge" (RUC). In 2025 the fee will be in addition to regular registration - $200 for EV and $50 for PHEV. In 2026 the RUC for EV will increase to $250 and PHEV will be $63. Initially, the RUC will be invoiced and paid separately from the vehicle registration.

Effective April 17, 2023 PennDOT will begin a central replacement of all standard vehicle registration plates that begin with the letter "D" free of charge. These plates were manufactured over 10 years ago and many are showing their age. Customers will begin receiving letters approximately 2-3 weeks before their new plate is received. When received, you need to attach it to your vehicle immediately as your old plate will be made dead in PennDOT and Law Enforcement systems.
