When you call for parts, knowing the engine make and model isn't always enough.

Engines within the same family can have different configurations that require different components. The engine serial number — ESN — is what uniquely identifies your specific engine and allows us to verify the correct part before anything ships.

That's why our part specialists ask for it. It's not extra paperwork — it's how we make sure you get the right part the first time and avoid returns, delays, and unnecessary downtime.

Where to find it: the engine data plate on the engine block, valve cover, or timing cover. It may also be in your service records or engine documentation.

Don't wait until the engine is down to look for it. Find it now and save it somewhere easy to access — it'll save time on every future call.

Most expensive diesel engine failures don't start with one big event. They build up from small habits that seem harmless at the time.

Here's what actually shortens engine life:

Skipping scheduled oil changes — Even pushing an interval a little too far, too often, adds up over time.

Ignoring warning lights — If the truck is still running, it's easy to put it off. That's usually when the damage quietly gets worse.

Working the engine too hard — Consistently pushing past what the engine is built for accelerates wear on every internal component.

Shutting down immediately after a heavy haul — The turbo and other components need time to cool down. Instant shutdown after hard work causes heat soak and accelerates wear.

Choosing cheap parts over the right ones — Low-cost replacements often cost more in the long run through premature failure and repeat repairs.

Most of this is preventable. Read the full breakdown on our blog 👇

Need a replacement cylinder head fast? We’ve got you covered.

Whether you’re tackling a repair or completing a rebuild, HHP has the quality, reliability and fit your engine needs.

But before installing a replacement, it’s important to understand what caused the original cylinder head to fail. Read our latest blog to learn what to inspect—and how to help prevent another failure.

A failed cylinder head usually isn't where the problem started.

In most cases, the head is a symptom of something else going wrong upstream — overheating, a restricted cooling system, improper installation, reused torque-to-yield head bolts, incorrect liner protrusion, or a failing injector. Any of these can put enough stress on a cylinder head to take it out.

Replacing the head without identifying and correcting the underlying cause puts the new component right back into the same damaging conditions. That's how you end up doing the same expensive repair twice.

At Highway and Heavy Parts, we look at the full picture — reviewing photos, discussing operating conditions, and working through the entire repair with the customer to find the actual root cause. The goal is to make sure the right parts get replaced correctly the first time.

In 30 years of working on trucks, this one is a first.

The video shows a head bolt that's either worked itself loose over time or failed outright — and it's a good reminder that not all parts are built the same way.

Whether it unthreaded gradually or broke under load, something failed that shouldn't. Head bolts don't rattle loose on a properly built engine using quality components.

This is exactly why Highway and Heavy Parts partners with top industry suppliers. The parts we carry are built to hold up under long-term heavy-duty use — not fail in ways nobody's seen before.

Quality matters. What you put in determines what comes out the other end.
