๐ค TIME TO WINTERIZE YOUR BOAT! โ๏ธ
As the boating season comes to an end, now is the time to prepare your boat and outboard motor for the Minnesota winter. Proper winterization can help prevent expensive damage caused by freezing temperatures, moisture, and old fuel.
Whether you have a 2-stroke or 4-stroke outboard, here are some important steps to consider:
๐ง FOR BOTH 2-STROKE & 4-STROKE MOTORS
โ
Fill the fuel tank and add the manufacturer's recommended fuel stabilizer. Run the engine long enough to circulate the treated fuel through the system.
โ
Flush the engine with fresh water and allow it to drain completely.
โ
Change the lower-unit gear oil and check for water or metal particles. If you see milky oil or excessive metal, have the motor inspected.
โ
Check the propeller and remove any fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft.
โ
Lubricate fittings and moving parts according to your manufacturer's recommendations.
โ
Store the motor in its normal vertical/down position so water can drain from the cooling system.
๐ต 2-STROKE OUTBOARD
โข Make sure the oil-injection system is properly filled, if equipped.
โข Follow the manufacturer's procedure for fogging the cylinders or protecting the engine's internal components.
โข If your motor requires adding oil to the fuel for winter storage, follow the manufacturer's specific instructions.
๐ข 4-STROKE OUTBOARD
โข Change the engine oil and oil filter before storage. Old oil can contain contaminants and moisture.
โข Check the engine oil level after running the motor.
โข Follow the manufacturer's instructions for fogging or internal engine protection if required.
๐ DON'T FORGET THE BATTERY!
Remove the battery if recommended by your manufacturer, clean the terminals, and store it in a cool, dry location. Keep it charged periodically with an appropriate battery charger/maintainer.
โฝ FUEL SYSTEM
Minnesota winters are hard on fuel systems. Use fresh fuel and the correct stabilizer, and always follow your engine manufacturer's recommendations regarding fuel storage.
๐ IMPORTANT: Every outboard is different. Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Suzuki, Evinrude, etc. may have different winterization procedures. Always check your owner's manual before performing winterization.
๐จ If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, have a qualified marine technician winterize the motor. A little preparation now can save you a lot of money when spring arrives!
๐ Take care of your boat now โ and you'll be ready to hit Cokato Lake again next season! ๐คโ๏ธ
