Tech Tip Tuesday
This one is a good example of what a small coolant leak can turn into over time. What you are seeing here is buildup left behind from coolant seeping past the threads of a sensor. As the coolant evaporates, it leaves behind deposits that can look crusty or chalky, usually white or light green depending on the type of coolant.
It might not drip enough to hit the ground, but it will slowly lower coolant level and can eventually introduce air into the system.
Low coolant or air pockets can lead to overheating, poor heater performance, and inaccurate sensor readings. In cases like this, the fix is usually removing the sensor, cleaning the threads, and reinstalling it with the proper seal or replacing it if needed.
If you notice a sweet smell, see residue like this under the hood, or your coolant level keeps dropping, it is worth getting it checked before it turns into a bigger issue.
