We get calls almost every week that start the same way: “My insurance company said I have to take my car to their preferred shop.”
Please understand that it is not true. This is called “steering”, and not only is it unethical, it completely violates insurance regulation in Alabama.
Alabama law is clear: Insurers cannot require you to use a specific shop for repairs. You do not have to use a preferred shop. That choice is yours, every time, no matter what you’re told on the phone. (Ala. Admin. Code r. 482-1-125-.08)
If someone’s telling you where you “have” to go, call us before you agree to anything. We’ll tell you what your rights are and handle the insurance company from there.
