What a great day it was today to be able to spend time with John and go through the restoration on his Chevelle. The opportunity for John and everyone involved to meet and talk with other car enthusiasts and to be able to see the joy this hobby bring to so many people

The Chevelle chassis was disassembled, and every nut, bolt and clip was bagged and tagged to be restored if possible. The frame and all the suspension components were sent out to be sandblast and brought back to the shop to be primed with a high build epoxy primer. We then start by hand sanding the high build primer to remove any minor pitting before starting to bodywork those parts. There was a lot of time and effort spent removing the rust pitting left behind after blasting. Once the bodywork was finished it was primed a second time to be final sanded and prepped to paint. When the chassis and all the components were restored, the chassis was assembled and the painted body was once again married up to it. Seeing it finally come together with the restored and new components makes the effort worthwhile.

So much time and effort goes into repairing the floors when restoring a car to this level. It starts with spraying a high build epoxy primer over the bare metal. The high build primer gives us the corrosion protection we need and some film build to sand out any minor imperfections. These floors needed a little more extensive bodywork to get them repaired. Once the bodywork was completed, we primed them a second time and moved forward with the final sanding and prepping for paint. Painting the floors was the first opportunity for John to see Marina Blue, the color that he would have ordered the Chevelle if he would have had the opportunity to.

Because of the flash rust under the original lacquer paint, we decided to use 3S chemical to dip the body. When the body was returned to the shop the process of scrubbing, metal prep and metal conditioning began. This is a process done to get the metal to accept epoxy primer. After the body and the bolt on sheet metal was primed with epoxy, we reassembled the sheet metal to bodywork the outer panels. This is done to ensure that we have proper panel gaps and body lines. Once the bodywork is complete, we prime the outer panels with a polyester primer.

For a Pennsylvania car pushing 60 years old, we were very happy with this 67 Chevelle was in. Typical of a car this old it had some signs of rust that needed to be repaired. When evaluating the Chevelle we also realized it had only been repainted one time and looked to have been done early on. As we went through the process of disassembling we noticed that it had been hit on the drivers side rocker panel and door. The outer door skin had been replaced with a GM panel and the rocker panel had been repaired. We decided to remove the rocker panel that was repaired replacing it with a new one. The GM door skin was removed to repair the inside door shell that was overlooked in its previous repair and we were able to reuse it. Other than those two panels this Chevelle retains its original metal.

In the fall of 2022, Shane, a friend of mine, told me about two Chevelle's that an old neighbor of his dad's had owned when he was growing up. Although he hadn't seen the cars in years, he was sure they were still tucked away safely in the garage. Murray, the original owner of the Chevelle's, had unfortunately passed. However, his wife, Carol, gave us the opportunity to lay eyes on these vehicles in person. Shane, Ginna and I met with her on a Sunday and our only intent was to photograph the cars. We had the pleasure of speaking with Carol and learning the history of Murray's Chevelle's. As we were getting ready to leave, Carol mentioned that her only regret was never having the chance to ride in the cars. Looking at the windshield, we noticed that the last Pa state inspection was in 1977.

Come Monday evening, I received a phone call from Carol stating that the Chevelle's were for sale and if interested she would like us to be the ones to purchase them. In talking with John Hofmann, a good friend who we have previously restored a few Mopar's for, he told me about his dream of owning a 67 Chevelle someday. In John's words, "Although I have grown into a Mopar nut, I have always had a place in my heart for the 67 Chevelle SS396". John was just 12 years old when the 67 Chevelle was released. He remembers admiring two Chevelle's walking to his school bus stop and that's where the love for the 67 Chevelle began for him. John jumped at the opportunity to buy this 67 Chevelle to fulfill his dream of owning one. With the original motor and transmission missing from the car, John decided to make changes to the Chevelle restoring it to the way he would have ordered it if he could have.
