But one successful start doesn't tell us the whole story. 🔋

A BATTERY DOESN'T ALWAYS GO FROM:

✅ PERFECT

straight to...

❌ DEAD.

Battery performance can decline over time.

And sometimes the first warning is subtle.

👂 EVER NOTICE THIS?

Normally:

🔑 RRR-RRR-VROOM!

Then one morning:

🔑 Rrrr... Rrrr... VROOM.

It still started.

But that slower crank may be your vehicle trying to tell you something.

DON'T IGNORE THE CLUE.

Inside an engine, some measurements are incredibly small.

A crankshaft journal and bearing may look like they fit perfectly.

But a good engine builder doesn't say:

**“Looks close enough.”**

They measure the clearance.

Because that tiny space matters.

Too much clearance can cause low oil pressure and accelerated wear.

Too little clearance can prevent the oil film from doing its job, create heat, and damage parts that were never supposed to touch.

Sometimes...

**space is part of the design.**

That's worth remembering outside the shop.

We have a habit of filling every open space in our lives.

Every hour gets scheduled.

Every quiet moment gets a phone shoved into it.

Every problem gets an immediate reaction.

Every disagreement needs another word.

Every unanswered question has to be solved right now.

But sometimes God does important work in the space we keep trying to eliminate.

TIRES DON’T JUST WEAR OUT.

THEY AGE OUT.

A tire can have plenty of tread remaining and still have problems caused by age, deterioration or damage.

That’s why checking a tire means looking at MORE than how deep the tread appears.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🔍 LOOK AT THE WHOLE TIRE:

📏 TREAD
How much usable tread remains?

📅 AGE
How old is the tire?

🔍 CONDITION
Are there cracks, bulges, cuts, damage or unusual wear?

💨 PRESSURE
Is it properly inflated?

All four matter.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

📅 HOW OLD IS YOUR TIRE?

On DOT-marked tires, the date portion of the Tire Identification Number uses four digits representing the WEEK and YEAR of manufacture.

Example:

2319

23 = 23rd week
19 = 2019

So a tire can LOOK almost new...

while its age tells a completely different story.

⚠️ Depending on the tire, the complete DOT identification may only appear on one sidewall.

🚗 “BUT IT HARDLY HAS ANY MILES!”

Mileage isn’t the only thing affecting tires.

Rubber is exposed to:

🌡️ Heat and temperature changes

In fabrication, you can make damaged metal look pretty.

Cover the crack.

Weld a plate over it.

Paint everything.

Stand back and admire it.

But there's one problem...

**The damage is still underneath.**

And eventually, when enough weight, vibration, or stress hits that weak spot, it's going to remind you that it was never actually repaired.

A quality repair means dealing with what's underneath first.

Cut out what can't be trusted.

Clean it up.

Repair the structure.

Then build from something solid.

Life isn't much different.

Sometimes we get hurt and instead of dealing with it, we simply start **building around it.**

We stay busy.

We bury ourselves in work.

We avoid the conversation.

We pretend we're over it.

We laugh when we're actually hurting.

We keep adding new things to our lives hoping nobody notices the crack underneath.

But God already sees it.

THAT LOW-FUEL WARNING ISN'T TELLING YOU:

It's telling you:

⛽ IT'S TIME TO FIND FUEL.

How much usable fuel remains when the warning appears varies by vehicle.

And the distance-to-empty number?

That's an ESTIMATE.

Not a promise.

🧠 “BUT IT SAYS I HAVE 32 MILES LEFT!”

Maybe.

But that estimate can change based on things like:

🚦 Stop-and-go driving

🏔️ Hills

🚚 Load

That number can move faster than you expect.

Many modern vehicles use an electric fuel pump located inside the fuel tank.

Fuel surrounding the pump can help with cooling and normal operation.

Regularly running the tank extremely low isn't a habit we'd recommend.

Anybody who's worked on vehicles has probably had this happen.

The box says it's right.

The part looks almost identical.

You get underneath the vehicle...

And something doesn't line up.

Bolt holes are off.

The connector is different.

The bracket won't sit correctly.

And that's when frustration starts whispering:

**“I can make this fit.”** 😂

Maybe you can.

Drill something.

Bend something.

Force something.

But making something physically go into a place doesn't mean it belongs there.

Life can be like that too.

Sometimes we're trying desperately to force something to work.

A relationship.

A job.

An opportunity.

A plan.

A direction we've already decided we're taking.

And when it doesn't fit, instead of asking God for direction...

**we grab a bigger hammer.**

*"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps."*

There's nothing wrong with making plans.

Scripture says we do.

But our plans still need to be surrendered to God's direction.

Sometimes a door that won't open doesn't need a harder kick.

Is there something in your life you're constantly trying to force?

Stop for a minute.

Pray about it.

Ask God:

A fuse blows.

You replace it.

It blows again.

Now you've got a choice.

Find out **why**...

or try to force the circuit to keep working.

That's when somebody gets the bright idea:

“Just put a bigger fuse in it.”

Bad idea. 😬

The fuse isn't necessarily the problem.

**It may be the thing preventing a much bigger problem.**

Somewhere there could be a wire rubbed through.

A short to ground.

A failing motor.

Too much current flowing through a circuit that wasn't designed to carry it.

The fuse sacrifices itself before the wiring becomes the fuse.

Life has limits too.

Sometimes a door closes.

A plan gets interrupted.

Something we're determined to make happen just won't happen.

Our first reaction can be:

**“God, why are You stopping this?”**

But what if sometimes He's protecting us from something we can't see?

📖 **Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV**

*"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."*

*"In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."*

We don't always understand why God redirects us.

We don't always see what's farther down the circuit.

That's where trust comes in.

Is there something you're trying to force right now?

Maybe instead of immediately asking God to remove the resistance, ask:

**“Lord, is there something You're protecting me from or redirecting me toward?”**

That doesn't mean every obstacle is automatically God's warning.

But it does mean we shouldn't be so determined to get our own way that we stop seeking His.

At B&M, if a fuse keeps blowing, you don't defeat the protection.

**You diagnose what's causing it.**

And you definitely don't stick a bigger fuse in there and hope for the best. 😂

God sees farther down the road than we do.

Trust Him enough to seek His direction before forcing yours.

🚨 NOT QUITE.

🔧 SHOP SECRET:

YOUR COOLING SYSTEM NEEDS MORE THAN SOMETHING WET.

The correct coolant mixture is designed to do several jobs:

❄️ Protect against freezing

🔥 Raise boil-over protection

🛡️ Help protect against corrosion

💧 Lubricate components such as the water pump

⚙️ Protect the different metals and materials inside the cooling system

Plain water alone can't provide all of that protection.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🚨 BUT HERE’S THE BIGGER QUESTION:

WHY WAS THE COOLANT LOW?

Cooling systems are designed to operate as closed systems.

If you're regularly adding coolant...

DON'T JUST KEEP TOPPING IT OFF.

🔍 FIND OUT WHERE IT'S GOING.

Possible causes can include:

💧 External leaks

🧢 Cap / pressure problems

🔧 Hose or connection leaks

❄️ Radiator problems

💦 Water-pump leakage

🔥 Internal engine problems

And other cooling-system faults.

🧪 COOLANT TYPE MATTERS TOO.

Here's another mistake:

“It’s green, so I'll add green.”

COLOR ALONE DOESN'T IDENTIFY THE CORRECT COOLANT.

Different vehicles can require different coolant chemistries and specifications.

Don't choose coolant based only on:

🎨 Color

👴 “What I've always used”

🛒 Whatever bottle happens to be nearby

Check what the VEHICLE actually requires.

💧 WHAT ABOUT DISTILLED WATER?

When coolant concentrate requires mixing, the proper water and mixture should be used according to the coolant and vehicle requirements.

Many coolants are also sold PREMIXED.

That means:

🚫 DON'T DILUTE A PREMIX JUST BECAUSE YOU SEE THE WORD COOLANT. 😂

Read the bottle.

Know what you're putting in.

🆘 EMERGENCY?

If you're stranded and the choice is between appropriate temporary action and damaging an overheating engine, water may sometimes be used temporarily when necessary.

BUT...

⚠️ NEVER OPEN A HOT, PRESSURIZED COOLING SYSTEM.

Hot coolant and steam can cause severe burns.

And once the emergency is over...

restore the system to the correct coolant mixture and find out WHY it became low.

One of the fastest ways to waste money repairing a vehicle is to start guessing.

“That part looks bad.”

“I heard these usually fail.”

“My buddy said it’s probably the alternator.”

So parts start getting replaced.

And sometimes, after spending a pile of money...

**the original problem is still there.**

A good technician does something different.

**TEST IT. VERIFY IT. FIND THE TRUTH.**

A relay can look perfectly fine on the outside and still have burned contacts inside.

A wire can look good and still have excessive resistance.

A battery can show voltage and still fail under load.

**Appearance isn’t proof.**

There’s a pretty powerful Biblical lesson in that.

📖 **1 Thessalonians 5:21 KJV**

*"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good."*

Not everything we hear deserves to become something we believe.

Social media.

Rumors.

Gossip.

Opinions.

Advice.

Even our own emotions can convince us something is true when it isn’t.

God gave us something to test it against:

Before repeating something about somebody, verify it.

Before reacting to something you heard, make sure it’s true.

Before allowing fear to convince you the worst is going to happen, bring it to God.

**Am I responding to truth, or reacting to an assumption?**

Truth doesn’t become truth because enough people repeat it.

Test it.

Pray about it.

Hold onto what is good.

“THICKER OIL PROTECTS THE ENGINE BETTER.”

Sounds logical...

More thickness = more protection.

RIGHT?

🚨 NOT NECESSARILY.

🔧 SHOP SECRET:

ENGINE OIL ISN'T ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL.

Your engine was designed with:

⚙️ Specific internal clearances

🛢️ Specific lubrication requirements

🌡️ Specific operating temperatures

🔄 Specific oil-flow requirements

And modern engines may use oil pressure and flow for systems that older engines never had.

That's why the manufacturer specifies an oil viscosity AND often an oil-performance specification.

🤔 WHAT DOES 5W-30 ACTUALLY MEAN?

Those numbers aren't:

“WEAK OIL” vs. “STRONG OIL.”

They describe viscosity characteristics under standardized temperature conditions.

For example:

5W-30

🥶 The “5W” relates to cold-temperature viscosity performance.

🔥 The “30” relates to viscosity characteristics at operating temperature.

Changing those numbers changes how the oil behaves.

⚠️ THICKER ≠ AUTOMATICALLY BETTER

Installing a heavier oil than the engine calls for isn't automatically giving it extra armor. 🛡️😂

Oil needs to FLOW where engineers designed it to go.

Modern engines may use oil for components and systems such as:

⚙️ Variable valve timing

🔧 Hydraulic lifters / adjusters

🌀 Turbocharger lubrication

⛓️ Timing-system components

🛢️ Oil-pressure-controlled systems

Using the correct oil matters.

🚨 AND VISCOSITY ISN'T THE WHOLE STORY.

Two bottles can both say:

5W-30

and still meet different specifications.

Depending on the vehicle, manufacturers may require particular:

📋 API classifications

📋 ILSAC standards

📋 Manufacturer-specific approvals/specifications

So don't choose oil based ONLY on the big numbers printed on the front of the bottle.

😂 THE OLD-SCHOOL ANSWER:

“My daddy ran 20W-50 in everything and never had a problem!”

Your daddy's engine might've been great.

But your modern turbocharged, direct-injected, variable-valve-timing engine didn't ask Grandpa what oil it wanted. 😂🔧
