HOW TO PROPERLY DISASSEMBLE FURNITURE FOR A MOVE
Moving to a new place can be both exciting and challenging. One of the most daunting tasks is dealing with large furniture pieces. While the thought of moving your bulky couch or bed might sound overwhelming, fear not! With a bit of planning and the right approach, disassembling furniture can become a breeze.

1. GATHER YOUR TOOLS
Before you start taking things apart, make sure you have all the necessary tools at hand. You’ll likely need screwdrivers (both flat-head and Phillips), Allen wrenches, pliers, and possibly a hammer or rubber mallet. Having a tape measure handy can also be helpful for noting down the dimensions of large pieces, aiding in reassembly at your new location.

2. TAKE PRECAUTIONS
Safety always comes first! When disassembling furniture, be cautious of sharp edges, heavy components, and pinching points. Wear work gloves and appropriate clothing to protect yourself from any potential hazards.

3. CONSULT THE MANUAL (IF AVAILABLE)
If you still have the assembly manual or instructions that came with your furniture, it can be a valuable resource. The manual often contains step-by-step disassembly instructions that are specific to your furniture piece. If you don’t have the manual, don’t worry; you can still follow some general guidelines.

4. EMPTY THE FURNITURE
Before disassembling, remove any items inside the furniture. Empty drawers, shelves, and cabinets to make the furniture lighter and prevent any damage to the contents during the move.

5. START WITH REMOVALE PARTS
Begin by removing any removable parts, such as cushions, pillows, legs, or decorative elements. Keep all the small parts together in a labeled bag or container, making it easier to find them during reassembly.
6. DOCUMENT THE PROCESS
If you’re disassembling complex furniture with many parts, consider taking photos or making sketches at each step. This documentation will serve as a reference when you reassemble the furniture later.

7. KEEP SCREWS AND HARDWARE ORGANIZED
As you dismantle the furniture, keep all screws, bolts, and hardware in separate bags or containers. Label each bag with a description of where the hardware came from, so you can easily identify them during reassembly. Sticky notes or masking tape can be helpful for this purpose.

8. USE ZIPLOCK BAGS FOR SMALL PARTS
For furniture with lots of small parts, like nuts and bolts, use small Ziplock bags to keep them secure. You can tape or tie the bags directly to the larger components they belong to.

9. WRAP AND PROTECT
Once the furniture is disassembled, wrap individual parts with furniture blankets or bubble wrap to prevent scratches and dents during transit. Label each wrapped piece to know what it is and which room it belongs to.

10. STORE HARDWARE WITH FURNITURE PIECES
Tape the bags of screws and hardware securely to the furniture pieces they belong to. You can also place them in a designated box labeled “Furniture Hardware” for easy access when you’re ready to reassemble.

11. STORE ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS SAFETLY
If you still have the original assembly instructions, don’t forget to pack them in a clearly marked box, so you can easily find them when needed.

12. CONSIDER PROFESSIONAL HELP
If the furniture seems too complex to disassemble or you’re unsure about handling it, consider hiring professional movers or furniture assemblers. They have the expertise and tools to dismantle and reassemble your furniture efficiently.

After following our tips on how to properly disassemble furniture for a move, you can see that it doesn’t have to be a stressful ordeal. With the right approach, a little planning, and some basic tools, you can tackle this task like a pro. Remember to stay organized, keep track of small parts, and prioritize safety throughout the process.

Moving tip for the day: Try packing with the Russian doll technique where its packing method involves nesting smaller items inside larger ones to save space and protect fragile items. It works similarly to the setup of a Russian doll, where each doll is a self-contained unit within a larger unit.

Here are some tips for using the Russian doll technique when moving:

• Wrap items individually: Before nesting items together, wrap each one in packing paper or bubble wrap.

• Start with least-used rooms: Begin packing in rooms that are used the least and work your way towards the most frequently used rooms.

• Use for small items: This technique is ideal for packing small items like pens, cooking utensils, shelf decor, and knick-knacks.

• Use for pots and pans: Place smaller pots and pans inside larger ones.

• Use for cups and bowls: Stack cups and bowls inside each other.

TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR ITEMS IN A STORAGE UNIT

If you're planning on keeping your possessions in a storage unit, you may be wondering what steps you can take to help proactively protect them.

PLACE BOXES AND FURNITURE ON WOODEN PALLETS
Since concrete can trap moisture from the air and cause dampness to degrade your boxes and furniture, consider putting down a plastic tarp or wooden pallets before you load your belongings into a storage unit. A wooden pallet is great for keeping an airflow for moisture to move freely if there is exposure.

MARK BOXES AND PLASTIC TUBS
- Make sure to mark boxes with dishes, glasses, electronics, etc., clearly with the word "Fragile."
- Place heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter boxes on top.
- Using the same size boxes for all items will make stacking easier to maximize your space.
- Label the contents of boxes with a list format; for example, instead of saying bedroom items list out "pictures, lamp base, floating shelves."

SORT YOUR BOXES FOR CONVENIENCE
- If you have just moved or plan to frequent your storage unit to add and remove items, you'll want to place frequently used items in the front for easy access.
- It may help to have a list or map of your storage items for efficiency.
- Clear containers will help you quickly locate their contents.

ORGANIZE YOUR BOXES AND STORAGE CONTAINERS
- Be sure to label all sides of your boxes with content names to prevent confusion if the box is shifted to a blank side.

SAVE SPACE
- Empty containers like trash cans and laundry baskets can store smaller items like picture frames, books, and plasticware.
- Large furniture pieces with drawers or cabinets will make a great storage nook as well. - Place odds and ends into small plastic containers and secure them inside.
- Turn large couches or loveseats on their flat end, so they stand upward.

COMMON REASONS FOR RENTING A STORAGE UNIT
Moving
Storing possessions while moving to a new home, transitioning between leases, living in temporary housing, and relocating across the country are some of the most common reasons for renting self storage.
Life Transitions
Whether it’s divorce, downsizing for retirement, caring for a family member’s estate, or working through a natural disaster, self storage can ease the burden when sudden life changes arise.
Decluttering
The best way to avoid moving to a larger home or office while also keeping your space clutter-free is to move items that you want to hang on to but don’t necessarily need at the moment to a storage facility.
Apartment Living
Using self storage can make apartment living easier. Especially if you live in a studio or one-bedroom apartment that doesn’t have much storage space, renting a storage unit can help you get more room.
Storing a Vehicle
Cars, motorcycles, RVs, boats, trailers, commercial vans, and more can be stored safely within a vehicle storage unit.
Home Renovations
Remodeling a home or office can take several weeks or months and may require you to move furniture and appliances out of the way. Moving these items to a storage unit temporarily is a convenient solution.
Business Storage
Small to mid-size businesses and contractors often use commercial storage units for additional space where they can store inventory, materials, files, equipment, or business vehicles.
College Storage
Freeing up space in a dorm room, heading home over the summer, or studying abroad for a few months are all reasons why college students rent storage close to their university campuses.
Military Living
Active military and military families are typically on the move every few years, making their way to different bases. As these changes can be drastic, military storage can be an incredible help when relocating.
