oh you silly Italians and your wordplay...

""Chi vespa mangia le mele, chi non vespa no" was an old, cool vespa billboard ad campaign in Italy in the 70s. Lasted for quite some time, and it was found also as full-page color ads in popular, well circulated magazines.
To the best of my knowledge, it was never connected to anything biblical. I never heard it like that, or any connection to that. No one ever interpreted it biblically among us. No bible intended. Keep in mind that the 70ies in Italy was the decade when the catholic church lost a lot of ground in Italy (the first divorce law was implemented, following a referendum that was won 51% vs, 49% ; the "compromesso storico" alliance between demochristians and communists was ratified politically; the Red Brigades kidnapped and killed prime minister Also Moro, the communists and socialists together were getting about 39% of popular votes at elections; the feminist movement was getting strong, Italy was just post the student revolution of 1968 which really shook the country intellectually; the trade unions were the strongest in Europe ... what I am trying to say is that Italy in the 70ies -- and like it is today -- is a strong, secular country, never mind the Vatican in Rome -- please no offense to the Catholics who may be on this board, mine is simply a socio-political description of the state of Italy back then, to de-mystify a possible incorrect notion of Italy as a religious and fervently pious society which it was/is not).
Whew .. did I end that parenthesis??? LOL.
The "chi vespa mangia le mele, chi non vespa no" was connected, instead, to eating "an apple a day" that is supposed to keep you healthy (even though the saying of an apple a day is not Italian, the idea of eating fresh veggies and fruit every day is ingrained in kids since they are little). "Hai mangiato una mela?" (did you eat your apple?) is the typical question the mom will ask the kids after lunch, to make sure they have eaten something good to wrap up their meal. "Ti dò una mela per merenda" (let me give you an apple as a snack) is also a mom's favorite. Etc.
So, the ad was playing on the idea of youth and health and how simple it is to be free (from diseases) with little money (an apple a day) and just a simple ready-to-have humble apple (as opposed to a fancy bottle of vitamin pills to schluck in the morning).
So, the ad's pitch was that the vespa is youthful, simple, ready to have, easy to ride (like an apple is easy to eat), and plentiful, so why not grab one? (a vespa, of course).
So, the world was divided in cool people (vespa people, apple-eating people) and geeks (those who don't).
In the original ad, the whole thing as written. The first part was written in big visible letters "chi vespa mangia le mele", the second part was written is much smaller letters underneath it "chi non vespa, no"
There is also an inventive "linguistic" aspect to this ad. Just as vespas look for inventive, original people to take ownership and ride them, in "Chi vespa mangia le mele" (those who ride vespas eat apples) the word vespa is conjugated as though it were a verb, where, of course it is not in standard Italian. In other words, it is like there is a verb "to vespa" rather than "to ride a vespa". Again, the idea of freedom which translates into freedom of language use, small transgressions with language rules, all in good fun.
"S/he who rides a vespa eats apples. S/he who does not ride a vespa doesn't" is the translation and now you also have the context it was written for."

METRO IS HIRING!

(I AM HIRING!)

We’re looking for a skilled mechanic to add to our staff. In this role, it will be your job to help maintain and repair our customers’ motos and scooters.

Tasks will involve using your specialized knowledge to diagnose the cause of an issue and to repair it. You’ll examine engines, test electrical systems, replace tires, and perform other repair and maintenance tasks.

We’d prefer to hire an individual who has some training in motorcycle/small engine tasks. But may also hire the right candidate without this qualification, as long as they’re able to carry out the major tasks of a mechanic without needing supervision.

You can begin the application process today by stopping by the shop and talking to me!

Mechanic Responsibilities:

Diagnose the sources of mechanical problems and repair them
Replace faulty and malfunctioning moto parts with new ones
Test electrical systems and make repairs as needed
Perform vehicle maintenance tasks like oil changes and tire replacement.

Metro Scooter is moving!
After 20 years in Evanston, we are moving to Northside.

Our new building will better facilitate our growth and allow us to perform service more efficiently.

This is not a second location, it is a move into a much larger space. The Montgomery Road location will remain open while we prepare and move. However, we are renovating the new space and moving is hard; please be patient with us as we adjust.

We will host a housewarming party once we're ready to have y'all visit the new space! Stay tuned!
