Did you know?

Porsche’s first car was actually electric.

Before the famous 911s and race cars, Ferdinand Porsche built the Lohner-Porsche in 1900—and it was powered by electric hub motors in the wheels. No engine up front, no drivetrain like we think of today—just electric motors directly driving the wheels.

Even crazier, he later made a version with a gas engine that powered a generator to feed those motors… basically creating one of the world’s first hybrid cars over 100 years ago.

Did you know?

The Ford Mustang was originally going to be a mid-engine car?

The very first Mustang concept in 1962 (called the Mustang I) was a two-seater, mid-engine sports car, more like a European exotic than the muscle car we know. It even had a tiny V4 engine and looked nothing like the production Mustang.

Ford scrapped that idea because they realized Americans wanted:

* 4 seats
* Affordability
* Practicality

So they pivoted—and that decision is what turned the Mustang into a mass-market legend instead of a niche sports car.

Did you know?

The name “Camaro” didn’t have a real meaning when Chevy first announced it in 1966—GM executives famously said it was “a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.”

It was basically a direct shot at Ford, since the Camaro was built specifically to compete with the Mustang.

Did you know?

In the late 1950s and early 60s, many Japanese cars had engines as small as 360cc—smaller than most motorcycles today—because of Japan’s Kei car laws, which gave tax breaks to tiny, efficient vehicles.

These ultra-small cars helped put an entire country on wheels after WWII and are still a huge part of Japanese car culture today.

Did you know?

The rearview mirror was inspired by a horse race.

In 1911, race car driver Ray Harroun didn’t want a riding mechanic (who normally watched behind), so he installed a mirror instead—making him the first person to race with a rearview mirror… and he won the first Indy 500 with it.

Did you know?

The Ford Model T was so simple and durable… farmers used to run it on moonshine (ethanol) when gasoline wasn’t available.

Henry Ford actually believed alcohol fuel could power the future.
