🚀 Research Confirms: and are transforming road construction.

According to a University of Illinois study, these deliver powerful benefits:

*50–200% increase in base-course stiffness
*Over 50% reduction in rutting
*20–40% thinner aggregate layers
*Traffic Benefit Ratio of 2.0–3.0 — roads lasting 2–3× longer
*Savings of $100K–$500K per mile

Real-world proof:
On I-90 near Chicago, geogrids cut base thickness from 18" to 10" with zero rutting after 5 million ESALs. Airport and rail tests showed similar gains — 33% less aggregate and up to 70% fewer ruts.

In an era of rising material costs, geosynthetics offer a smarter, more sustainable way to build stronger, longer-lasting infrastructure.

What benefits have you seen using geogrids or geotextiles on your projects?

At Carthage Mills, we're proud to supply proven solutions that deliver these results.

🚧 Pro Tip for Stronger, Longer-Lasting Segmental Retaining Walls (SRW)

Proper installation of geogrid reinforcement is one of the most critical factors in the performance and longevity of segmental retaining walls.

At Carthage Mills, we've put together clear, practical Installation Guidelines for Segmental Retaining Walls to help contractors and engineers get it right the first time.

Here are a few key best practices straight from the guide:

📌Install the geogrid under tension in the machine direction (perpendicular to the wall face) and maintain that tension until it's covered by at least 6 inches of structural fill.
📌Use one continuous piece per length — avoid overlaps in the machine direction. Adjacent panels should butt together for 100% coverage.
📌Place and compact reinforced backfill in maximum 8-inch lifts to 95% standard Proctor density (or as specified by the engineer).
📌Within 5 feet of the wall face, use only walk-behind compaction equipment. -Never run tracked equipment directly on the geogrid until there's at least 8 inches of fill over it — and minimize turning.
📌Always follow the specific block manufacturer’s recommendations for connection and placement.

When done correctly, these steps help prevent wrinkles, movement, and long-term performance issues — delivering more stable, cost-effective walls.
