🇺🇸 THE JEEPS OF GROUND ZERO
A quiet chapter in an extraordinary story of courage.
On September 11, 2001, America witnessed unimaginable loss—and immeasurable bravery.
As firefighters, police officers, first responders, rescue workers, volunteers and ordinary citizens rushed toward danger, Jeep vehicles became a small but meaningful part of the massive rescue and recovery effort.
The FDNY lost 91 pieces of apparatus that day. As the department worked urgently to rebuild its fleet, Jeep Grand Cherokees were among 48 support vehicles purchased or donated to transport battalion chiefs, EMS supervisors and other essential personnel.
And then there was Nikie’s red Jeep.
Nikie, a 120-pound Golden Retriever trained in disaster relief, traveled through Ground Zero in a red 1986 Jeep CJ-7. Alongside his handler, Nikie brought comfort and support into a place filled with devastation.
That Jeep also carried 12-year-old Michele Kidd and thousands of handmade red, white and blue heart pins created by children across America. The pins were given to firefighters and responders as small symbols of gratitude, unity and love.
A red Jeep.
A courageous dog.
Thousands of handmade hearts.
One nation standing together.
These vehicles were never the heroes.
The heroes were the people who climbed inside them—those who answered the call, transported supplies, searched through the rubble, comforted the grieving and refused to abandon hope.
Twenty-five years later, we remember the 2,977 lives taken. We honor the 343 FDNY members who made the ultimate sacrifice. We recognize every responder, volunteer, working dog and family forever changed by that day.
At Marino Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we are humbled to preserve this small chapter of Jeep history—not as a story about automobiles, but as a story about service.
Because when the road ahead was buried beneath unimaginable darkness, courageous Americans still found a way forward.
We remember the lives.
We honor the heroes.
We will never forget.
