THROWBACK THURSDAY: FORD FLEET

The Denver Police Department got their first real fleet in 1921. To show them off, the agency had a 60 car parade down Colfax & Speer Boulevard. The cars were ordered from Ford, and all of them were black, because that was the only color Ford produced cars in at the time. They all had hand-cranked sirens, and a red headlight mounted somewhere facing the front. The two-door coupes were for patrol, the sedans were for Sergeants and Captains, and Chiefs had “chauffeur” patrolman drive them around. Even with the new cars, the majority of the officers on patrol still walked their beat.

This photo was taken 103 years ago, in 1921, near the City Hall Building located at 14th Street and Larimer Street.
