Amateur radio

From 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 25th through approximately noon on Sunday, January 26th, the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society will be participating in an international amateur radio event known as Winter Field Day. This year, they will be operating from the barn at Harvest Home Park in Cheviot, Ohio. They welcome any and all visitors to stop by and see what Winter Field Day and amateur radio is all about.

So what is amateur radio? Are we a bunch of wannabe DJs that like cold weather or something? Not at all! In fact, FCC rules strictly prohibit us from transmitting music and most of us aren’t crazy about freezing. Amateur radio is about communicating and a major piece of that is emergency communications. Emergencies can happen any time of the year and in any weather conditions, so Winter Field Day is an opportunity to practice field operations during a less than ideal time of the year so we can be prepared should our services be needed during a true emergency. Our communications capabilities allow us to communicate across town or around the world with minimal resources. If we have the right radio, a basic antenna and a power source like a car battery or generator, we can usually find a way to get messages where they need to go. We can communicate by voice, by Morse code, via satellite - we even have ways to send e-mail messages without access to the internet. In our local community, amateur radio operators provide communications assistance for a number of events you are likely familiar with such as marathons, cycling events, events on the river, etc. and we even work with a number of local municipalities and agencies to provide emergency backup communications and other types of assistance for them should they have a need due to a technical problem with their systems or some sort of situation that overwhelms their resources.

If we do all of this stuff, why are we “amateurs?” Well, we don’t get paid (the FCC doesn’t allow it), so we’re amateurs! We volunteer our time and equipment because we enjoy the hobby and we enjoy giving back to our community. Many of us take the hobby very seriously though and operate in a very professional manner which brings us back to why we’re outside in January. We practice our skills so we are ready to serve the community should a need arise. Please stop by and say “hi!” We would love to show you what we do!
