Relaxing afternoon at “The Heave”. We were called to aid in the recovery of a fisherman’s sunken snowmobile. This spot is well known to swallow vehicles from time to time, but looked passable this morning. We ask that you all remember to be respectful and remember mistakes happen. While out on the lake we traveled from Hydroflites to The Heave….. Ice looked and felt great! No water on top except right near the landing which is to be expected.

Great reminder folks! Stay safe, we will do our best to be available in times of need!

HIGH-IMPACT ACTIONS FOR EXTREME COLD EVENTS

Here are the five highest-impact actions that consistently prevent the most injuries, deaths, and property damage during extreme cold events. These are practical, defensible, and scalable—whether for households, businesses, or communities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Protect Life First: Heat, Power, and Carbon Monoxide Safety

Ensure you have at least one safe, reliable heat source that does not rely solely on grid power (rated indoor heaters, fireplaces, or backup heat).

Never use generators, grills, or propane heaters indoors or in garages—carbon monoxide kills quietly and quickly.

Install and test CO and smoke alarms, especially if using alternative heat sources.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Prevent Water & Infrastructure Failures

Insulate or heat-tape exposed pipes, open cabinet doors to allow warm air circulation, and know where the main water shutoff is located.

Let faucets drip during prolonged sub-zero periods if recommended locally—this is cheaper than a frozen pipe.

For businesses and critical facilities, verify freeze protection on fire suppression and HVAC systems.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Prepare for Power Outages (72 Hours Minimum)

Have food, water, medications, and lighting for at least three days—longer in rural areas.

Keep phones charged and consider battery banks or small solar chargers.

Identify warming centers or safe relocation options before conditions deteriorate.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Winterize Vehicles & Travel Plans

Keep vehicles at least half a tank full to prevent fuel line freeze-ups and allow emergency heating.

Carry a winter vehicle kit: blankets, traction aids, flashlight, food, water, and jumper cables.

Delay travel when possible—cold + breakdown + response delays is one of the most common fatal combinations.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Protect Vulnerable People, Pets, and Livestock

Check on elderly neighbors, those with medical devices, and anyone relying on home heat or power.

Bring pets indoors; livestock need windbreaks, unfrozen water, and increased feed.

Plan now for medical needs during outages, including oxygen, refrigerated meds, or dialysis contingencies.

Not even the colder weather can keep us from lending a hand. This weekend definitely reminded us that sometimes we can all use a phone a friend, and we are proud to be that friend. Saturday, after spending the day Skiing with family, we received a call from a good friend whose daughter found some weak ice near a small bridge on the Chetek chain. As fate would have it, we were only about 15 miles away. A plan was made. Dispatch was called, reporting the incident to prevent unnecessary emergency services from being called by passing motorists. It was almost dark when I pulled out of the yard with the boom truck. Through quick response, and great cooperation from local law enforcement, traffic was slowed and the recovery went flawlessly. (Sorry no pictures as I was alone)

Sunday- (Today) while at a wrestling tournament for my boys, I received another call from yet again another good friend of mine! My buddy Brad Ingram from Blackjack Towing had received a call of a 4 wheeler in almost the exact same situation. I told Brad I’d have to finish watching the boys, but could lend a hand when they got done. I made a few calls to some of my friends, (that’s the fun part about all of us needing to be able phone a friend), and through more great communication and planning our recovery went great! Fortunately, we have a few pictures from today!

Remember to hit that like and share button!

We continued the fun today, Traveling to Hemlock Lake in Chippewa County. Our team received the call for assistance at 8:52 am. After a brief discussion, and realizing we needed our own eyes on the situation, 2 of us traveled out to the pinned location. This practice is quite common for us as most of the time we only receive a pin and possibly a few pictures. By 10:30am we had checked ice and developed a solid plan! 10:42 am, we get enough reception to call back to the rest of the team, informing them of our plans so they can start loading necessary equipment. 11:43 am, We arrive at the recovery site with equipment. Equipment is then shuttled in pieces down to the actual area where it is needed, then assembled. Through good communication and proper training, we power through setup! After attaching our rigging, we begin to lift the machine. 1:57pm Finally, the moment we all are looking forward to, it begins to raise! Once raised, we then pulled the unit as a whole to safer ice, SUCCESS!!! 2:22pm The machine is recovered, and enroute to the owner place, and tear down begins. 4:12pm The Team is enroute back to the shop. 5:08pm Equipment is back in the shop drying out, READY for the next call!

Was a busy week in some not so accessible areas. The Utv was on the Chippewa Flowage, while the snowmobiles were on Ojaski Lake. Just a friendly reminder to know where you’re riding, and just because we’ve had cold weather, not all ice is good right now! Everyone ended up being ok, but that’s not always the case.
