On February 2, 2018, 16-year-old Kevon Watkins came home upset from school. Frustrated by slow internet, investigators said he secretly changed the family’s Wi-Fi password so he could get a better connection. When his mother, LaToya Watkins, discovered what he had done, she unplugged the router.
That’s when everything spiraled.
According to court testimony, Kevon stormed toward his mother as if he was going to hit her. His 20-year-old sister, Alexus Watkins, didn’t hesitate.
She stepped in to protect her mother.
She wrapped her brother in a bear hug, hoping to calm the situation.
Instead, prosecutors said Kevon put Alexus into a chokehold.
As seconds turned into minutes, her mother and younger sibling pleaded with him to let her go.
He didn’t.
Kevon later admitted he continued choking Alexus even after she stopped moving because he was still angry.
When deputies arrived about 10 minutes after the 911 call, they found Kevon still holding his sister.
Only after an officer ordered him a second time did he finally let go.
Alexus collapsed to the floor.
She was unresponsive. Her tongue hung from her mouth, and she had lost control of her bladder.
She was rushed to the hospital, but she died from asphyxiation.
Later, LaToya said, “I didn’t realize he was choking her that hard.”
Kevon cried in court when he learned his sister had died, insisting he never meant to kill her.
The judge disagreed, finding the evidence did not support that it was simply an accident.
Kevon Watkins was sentenced to life in prison for felony murder.
