Anyone can tell a student what they did wrong. The instructors we look for know when to say something and when to let a student work through a moment on their own.

That balance takes longer to develop than most people expect. It's part of why our instructors spend real time in the passenger seat before they're leading lessons on their own, learning not just what to teach, but when to teach it.

Halloween marks the end of a month that's asked a lot of new drivers, changing light, changing weather, a schedule that never quite settles down. If you've been working on it this October, that effort has been noticed, even on the days that felt ordinary.

Calm, grounded, and easy to connect with, that's exactly the kind of instructor every new driver needs. Cayenne's daughter found all of that in Donald at The Next Street Southbury, and the experience showed. Great feedback makes great drivers. Thank you for sharing, Cayenne! πŸ™Œ

️Overcorrecting the steering wheel is one of the biggest causes of accidents for new drivers!

Small, smooth adjustments keep you in control, big jerky movements don't. Watch this video to understand why this matters and how to avoid this common mistake.

πŸš— Save this to share with a new driver!

By late October, sunset creeps earlier every single day, and a drive that felt totally normal in September can feel noticeably harder by the time you're heading home now.

Some drivers notice it right at sunset. Others don't feel the difference until full dark sets in twenty or so minutes later.

Getting your license does not always mean you can immediately start driving your friends around.

Both Connecticut and Massachusetts place passenger restrictions on newly licensed teen drivers, especially during the first months after getting a license. The exact rules are different in each state, so it is worth knowing what applies before making plans.

In Connecticut, 16- and 17-year-old drivers generally cannot carry friends during their first year of licensure. The first six months are limited mainly to qualified supervising adults, and immediate family is added during the second six months.

In Massachusetts, Junior Operators generally cannot carry passengers under 18 who are not immediate family during their first six months unless a qualified adult is seated beside the driver.

It is one of those rules that is much easier to know before everyone is standing by the car asking for a ride.

Check your state’s current passenger restrictions before you drive.

Washer fluid is probably one of the easiest under-the-hood checks to learn, and it’s also one of the easiest to forget about until you actually need it.

Knowing where the reservoir is, what the cap looks like, and how to top it off takes only a couple of minutes.

A few things to remember:
β†’ Look for the cap with the windshield spray symbol
β†’ Use actual windshield washer fluid, not just whatever liquid is nearby
β†’ Pour slowly and avoid overfilling
β†’ If it keeps running low quickly, it may be worth checking for a leak

Clear visibility matters more than people think, especially once rain, road salt, bugs, or dirty weather start building up on the windshield.

Worth checking before the reservoir is completely empty.

Most new drivers watch the car right in front of them. Experienced drivers are already looking two or three cars further up.

Here's why that matters: brake lights ripple backward through traffic. If you can spot that ripple starting two cars ahead, you have time to ease off gradually instead of braking hard at the last second.

A few places to practice this on purpose:
β†’ Highway traffic that's starting to slow but hasn't stopped yet
β†’ Approaching a light that's been green for a while
β†’ Merging areas where cars ahead are adjusting speed

This is a habit, not a rule, which means it only builds with repetition.

A few extra miles per hour doesn't feel like much from inside the car. What it really changes is how much time you have, time to stop, and time to react to something unexpected.

Speed limits aren't arbitrary numbers. They're set based on the road itself: curves, visibility, how many driveways or intersections feed into it.

The habit that helps most isn't slamming on the brakes when you notice you're going too fast. It's checking your speed often enough that you rarely need to.

June is winding down. If you've been putting in practice hours this month β€” this one's for you.

πŸ—³οΈ What's your biggest driving win so far?

A. First time on the highway alone
B. Nailed parallel parking
C. Passed the permit test
D. Completed my required practice hours

Drop your answer in the comments ⬇️ or vote in our story.

Every single one of these counts. Driving builds one mile at a time β€” and the miles you put in now are the foundation for every drive after this.

If you have a win that isn't on the list β€” we want to hear it. Drop it below. πŸŽ‰

Lane discipline is one of those skills that separates newer drivers from experienced ones β€” and most people don't realize they have a problem with it until someone points it out.

Here's what good lane discipline looks like in practice:

β†’ Your vehicle should be centered in its lane β€” not riding the line, not drifting toward the shoulder, not hovering near the center line.
β†’ On a curve, the natural tendency is to drift toward the outside. Fight it. Let your eyes lead through the curve β€” where you look is where the car goes.
β†’ In a lane change, signal first, check mirrors, check blind spot, then move. One smooth motion β€” not a gradual drift over several seconds.
β†’ On the highway, the right lane is for driving. The left lane is for passing. Move left to pass, return right when clear. This isn't just courtesy β€” it's CT and MA law.
β†’ Don't "straddle" lanes at intersections or in turn lanes. Your wheels should be fully in one lane before you enter an intersection.

Lane drift is one of the most common evaluator deductions on road tests β€” and one of the easiest to fix with awareness and practice.

What's a lane discipline habit you've been working on? Drop it below. πŸ‘‡

The check engine light comes on and most new drivers do one of two things: panic or ignore it entirely.

Here's a better approach.

First β€” understand what it's telling you.

The check engine light covers a huge range of issues, from a loose gas cap to a misfiring engine. On its own, it doesn't tell you which.

What to check first:
β†’ Is the gas cap fully tightened? Loose caps are one of the most common triggers. Tighten it and see if the light clears within a day or two.
β†’ Is the light solid or flashing? Solid = worth getting checked soon, not an emergency. Flashing = something is actively wrong. Pull over safely and call for help or a tow.

If the light is solid and the car seems to be running normally:
β†’ You can continue driving carefully to a mechanic or auto parts store
β†’ Most auto parts stores (AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance Auto) will read the diagnostic code for free
β†’ Do not ignore it indefinitely β€” what starts minor can compound

If the car is running rough, shaking, losing power, or smoking:
β†’ Pull off the road safely
β†’ Turn off the engine
β†’ Call roadside assistance

The check engine light is a communication, not a crisis. Knowing how to read it keeps a minor issue from becoming a major one.

Save this. πŸ“Œ

More crashes happen at intersections than anywhere else on the road.

Not because intersections are complicated, but because that's where drivers stop paying attention.

Swipe through five intersection mistakes that cause the most problems β€” and what to do instead. ➑️

Save this. It's worth knowing before your next drive. πŸ“Œ

06/23/2026

Learning to drive at 20 or 25 is not the same as learning at 16 β€” and most driving schools don't acknowledge that.

Here's what's actually different:

You have better judgment. Adults process risk more clearly than teenagers. The decisions that require experience β€” reading traffic, anticipating other drivers, making judgment calls at intersections β€” those come faster for adult learners.

You have more patience. You're choosing to be there. That changes the learning dynamic completely.

What can take longer: the physical habits. Smooth braking, managing the width of the car, parallel parking muscle memory. These are repetition skills. They build with miles, not with age.

What matters most: getting those miles in. Structured lessons build the technique. Time behind the wheel builds the confidence.

Adult learners tend to overthink early and underpractice. The most useful thing you can do is drive somewhere β€” anywhere β€” on routes you know, in low-pressure conditions, and add variety gradually.

You're not behind. You're exactly where you are.

Third permit question of the month. This one is directly tied to real crash data.

πŸ”΅ What is the minimum safe following distance recommended on a highway?

A. 1 second
B. 2 seconds
C. 3 seconds
D. 5 seconds

Drop your answer ⬇️
Β·
Β·
Β·
The answer is C β€” 3 seconds minimum.

We've talked about the 3-second rule before β€” but here's why it matters specifically at highway speeds:

At 65 mph, 3 seconds = approximately 286 feet of following distance.

That 286 feet accounts for:
β†’ 1–1.5 seconds of reaction time (your brain + your foot)
β†’ 1.5–2 seconds of braking distance in good conditions

It is the absolute minimum. In rain, increase it to 4–5 seconds. Behind trucks or motorcycles, give more.

On CT and MA highways β€” I-95, I-91, Route 128 β€” traffic conditions change fast. The 3-second gap is what keeps a sudden brake from becoming a collision.

Save this. πŸ“Œ It comes up on the permit test.
